Stomach cancer or Gastric cancer is the 2 nd most common cause of cancer related death worldwide. Though a relatively uncommon form of cancer among Indian population, it is important to recognise gastric cancer at an early stage as the 5 year survival ranges from 70 % for localised disease to less than 5% for advanced disease. Also the recent advances in Endoscopy , Radical surgery, Chemotherapy and Radiation therapy hold new promises in the treatment of Gastric cancers detected at an early stage.
The possible symptoms of Gastric cancer include
- Abdominal pain that is more in upper abdomen and usually not relieved with Antacids
- Recent change in the nature of pain that is being treated as Gastritis.
- Unintentional weight loss
- Progressive decrease in quantity of food intake and early satiety
- Recurrent vomiting
- Blood vomiting or passage of black coloured stools
- Dysphagia or sensation of food getting stuck in the chest while swallowing
-Unexplained Anaemia ( low haemoglobin )

Anyone with any of the above symptoms should Undergo an Upper GI Endoscopy which is the gold standard investigation.

Colon and Re**al Cancer incidence has been increasing over time in our country. It is among those few cancers which may hold a promise of cure, when detected at early stages. The symptoms are usually vague and include:
-Recently noticed change in bowel habits. This may be a recent onset diarrhoea, constipation or a change in consistency of stools.
- Passing blood in stools
-Vague abdominal pain that may be associated with bloating and cramping
- Unexplained fatigue, low haemoglobin levels
- Unintentional weight loss

How do we reduce the chances of getting Colon and re**al cancer ?
Preventive measures mostly include dietary and lifestyle changes
- High fiber in diet : Indian diet which generally has high fiber has been protective and this explains lower incidence of colore**al cancer in India compared to the western word. Recent westernisation of our diet may be counterproductive
- Diet rich in calcium and folic acid.
- limit alchohol intake
- Avoid processed meat
- Avoid red meat to less than 500 gms a week or less
-Avoid to***co products
-Those with known family history of colon or Re**al cancer are at a higher risk and should undergo screening.

Faecal occultblood study is a basic investigation that one may undergo as a part of regular health check after the age of 50 years. Though we do not have a streamlined colore**al cancer screening program in our country, in patients with symptoms or in those with a strong family history a Colonoscopy test is definitely indicated.
