A new form of diabetes, Type 5, just got official recognition.

And there are over 20 million people with it worldwide.

The newly recognized form of diabetes, known as Type 5, has been officially added to the global classification by the International Diabetes Federation.

Unlike other types, Type 5 diabetes stems from malnutrition during early life, particularly in low-income regions.

Affecting an estimated 20–25 million people worldwide, this form is not caused by autoimmunity or lifestyle factors, but by underdeveloped pancreases due to inadequate childhood nutrition.

Researchers believe that poor protein intake during critical growth periods stunts the development of insulin-producing cells, leaving individuals vulnerable to diabetes despite being underweight.

The recognition of Type 5 diabetes marks a significant shift in global health perspectives. While common types like Type 1 and Type 2 are well known and often linked to genetics or lifestyle, Type 5 sheds light on the lasting effects of poverty and malnutrition. With at least a dozen diabetes variants now identified—including gestational diabetes and rarer genetic or treatment-induced forms—this expanded classification underscores the need for tailored healthcare responses worldwide. Understanding the diverse roots of diabetes is essential to improving outcomes and ensuring equitable access to treatment, particularly in underserved communities.

Morsel of Sorrel- heard of it?

Gongura is a sour plant, either Kenaf (Hibiscus cannabinus) or Roselle (Hibiscus sabdariffa) commonly called in English as Sorrel.
This tangy green leafy vegetable can be had both as a main and as a condiment.
Gongura, or Sorrel leaves are, in fact, grown across the country—and mostly famous in Andhra Pradesh. It is variously called ambaadi (Marathi), pulichakeerai (Tamil), pundi/pined p***e (Karnataka), mestapata (Bengali), anthur (Mizo), sougri (Manipuri), sankokda (Punjabi), samelli (Chakma) mwitha (Bodo). And the gongura leaf’s unique taste and ability to flavour both vegetarian and non-vegetarian dishes has given it numerous interpretations across kitchens.

The red stemmed variety is more sour than the green stemmed variety. It is commonly made into pachadi, chutney (Andhra), curry or dal with meat, used to make tea, pickle or eaten with Jawar rotti or ragi balls as a side dish.

Gongura is a rich source of iron, vitamins A, C, folic acid and anti-oxidants (carotenoids- lutwin, zeaxanthin) and calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, potassium, iron and zinc. Iron and folic acid are important for haemoglobin, while calcium, magnesium and phosphorus are necessary for strong bones. Magnesium and potassium help in nerve conduction and muscular health.

The high content of vitamin C, and zinc play a major role in boosting the immune system. This is also one of the reasons gongura is widely consumed even during the monsoons. Also, since it grows a little higher than ground level, risk of contamination is comparatively low.

Gongura leaf is anti-inflammatory in nature. It heals ulcers, wounds, boils etc and also treats swelling, ringworm, itchy skin etc. In case of a scorpion bite, it can be used as a remedy. It helps treat hypertension due high potassium content and it’s high oxalic content may reduce calcium absorption but useful to treat cancer.

My gongura chutney was tasty and brought a bit of the monsoon feel into my home. Eat local, eat per season! See less

What’s in your cuppa green tea?
The Dutch call out, “thee”, Polish “herbata”, Greek “tsai” Indians simply say “chai”, Can you guess who they all miss?
It’s me, “Camellia sinensis”.
Confused why Camella is not in her senses?
To clear this, my identity I must explain,
In words simple and plain.
My history is as old as 2700 BC,
A shrub, I grew in China, from times you cannot even forsee.
To bring fame to my health potential,
Jumping into the hot water cup became quintessential. Startled, the Chinese King peered into his cup
Thank God, my aroma is providential!
Tempted, he sipped.
And gushed, “how delicious”, thanking his divine luck. But, let me remind you, my arrival is not circumstantial!
Legend has it that I was known
For my powers of the unknown.
Catechins are the most important type of flavonoids I contain
But, from using too much scientific jargon, I will refrain.
Flavonoids are present in wine and apples and berries too
But, no one tops me; “whoo hoo”!
While you dip dip dip your little bag of green tea in a hot water cup, I silently infuse the goodness of catechins in your magic cup!
What magic is in my cup you may ask,
90mg of the different catechins is waiting; but, listing them, is a task.
Catechins are classified into 4 tongue twisters,
But believe me, they are all sisters!
Hold your breath, I will not list them all,
Just remember the major one, not all! Epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) is the most beneficial one,
It protects you from damage caused by harmful things,
Relax! My green tea gives you 65mg of EGCG- all said and done. My green tea helps your inner processes run smoothly aflow Which in turn, helps you stay healthy and age with glow.
While you sip your magic cuppa good health
Don’t forget- more the dips, higher the benefits to your health!
