3 Main Types Of Conjunctivitis
1.Viral Conjunctivitis
Cause: Often caused by viruses such as adenovirus or the same viruses that cause the common cold.
Symptoms: Watery discharge, redness, irritation, and a gritty feeling in the eye. It often starts in one eye and spreads to the other.
Transmission: Highly contagious and can spread through direct or indirect contact with the eye secretions of an infected person.
Treatment: Usually resolves on its own within a week or two. Cool compresses and artificial tears can provide relief, but antiviral medications are rarely needed unless in severe cases.
2. Bacterial Conjunctivitis
Cause: Caused by bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pneumoniae, or Haemophilus influenzae.
Symptoms: Thick, yellow-green discharge from the eye, redness, and swelling of the eyelids. The eyes may stick together, especially after sleeping.
Transmission: Highly contagious and can spread through direct contact with infected secretions, contaminated surfaces, or personal items.
Treatment: Often treated with antibiotic eye drops or ointments, which can help speed up recovery. It typically improves within a few days of treatment.
3. Allergic Conjunctivitis
Cause: Triggered by allergens such as pollen, dust mites, pet dander, or mold.
Symptoms: Itchy, red eyes, tearing, and swelling of the eyelids. Unlike viral or bacterial conjunctivitis, this type is not contagious.
Transmission: Non-contagious.
Treatment: Treated with antihistamine or anti-inflammatory eye drops. Avoiding allergens can help prevent flare-ups.
