All behaviours are form of communication!

When a child is exhibiting some undesirable behaviour (tantrum, excessive crying, repetitive behaviour, hitting etc), it may appear to us odd, inappropriate to age and distressing.

But actually, child is trying to communicate something. All behaviours are purposeful and so are undesirable behaviour.

Master the ART OF OBSERVING!

Nothing has such power to broaden our understanding as our ability to observe. When words fail to express, actions speak a lot. But we are programmed to be dependent on words and miss the vital information.

As a parent or as a professional, enhance the skill to observe the child, the changes you observe in the responses will provide wealth of understanding. The eyes and gestures, the likes and dislikes, the curiosity and tantrums communicates a lot.
Just carefully observe and see the difference in your own understanding.

Transition from one developmental stage to another can be challenging and it is more challenging for people with disability.

This heterogenous group, with unique needs are trained in structured settings but when required to get integrated in community, in particular when transiting from adolescene to adulthood systematic transition planning may be needed.

It was an honour and pleasure to share my knowledge and experience in CRE on the topic 'Life beyond classroom: Transition Strategies for young people with disabilities'
organized by NIEPMD & Madhumay Educational & Research Foundation.

The various skills on which transition planning for young people with disability needs to focus are- Self management & advocacy, Safety, Social & Communication, Transportation, Leisure & Recreation, Work related skills etc.

"A journey from Disability to This Ability".

As we are celebrating International Day for Persons with Disability(3rd December), today we share the inspiring example of SADHNA DHAND.

"Adversity can be turned into opportunities simply by adjusting perception and changing attitude."

Sadhna Dhand, an artist from Raipur is a perfect example of a person who has turned physical adversity into strength. She suffer from Osteogenesis Imperfecta that makes bones fragile and vulnerable to fractures. She lost her hearing at the age of 12 years and could reach upto only 3.3 feet height.
Her mother late Rajkumari Dhand introduced Sadhna to joy of painting and it helped her to battle the challenges of life through art.

She has inculcated skills in her different art forms like Tanjore painting, Glass painting, Ceramics and Sculptures.

Not only in painting but also in photography she developed her skills. She has imparted her art to thousands of people and is recepient of various State and National Awards.

Arunima Sinha

27-year-old Arunima Sinha lost her left leg in an unfortunate incident on April 11, 2011.

Despite the fact that she lost a leg, she did not gave up the spirit of her life and defied all conceivable odds.

Infact, Arunima decided to convert her weakness into her biggest strength and by her true determination, on May 21, 2013, she achieved the rare feat to become the first Indian amputee to conquer the Mount Everest, with the help of a prosthetic leg.

Beside setting an example to the world, Arunima also made India, a proud nation when she hoisted the Indian tricolour flag at the peak of the Mount Everest.

A theoretical physicist, astrophysicist, cosmologist, and eminent scientist, Stephen Hawking was diagnosed with ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis) at the age 21: he was given 2 more years to live. He lived until he was 76-years-old.

He had been paralysed from head to toe for over thirty years and used a voice synthesiser to communicate, and a wheelchair that he operated through slight movements of the head and eyes.

None of this prevented him from developing his activity as an exemplary researcher and professor, and intense personal life that allowed him to make his illness known to the world.

Becoming one of the most recognisable celebrities of our time, his story was taken to the cinema in the film "The Theory of Everything".

" My name is Bhavya and I have a rich experience of 12 years, working in the development sector across various cities, majorly Mumbai. In the due course of my work I had an opportunity of working on Mental Health Awareness amongst the communities. Hailing from one of the BIMARU states of the country, I was astonished to know mental health was being talked about so openly as even though I had seen so many cases in my native that could be clearly categorized under mental health, people would not accept this or no one would even talk about approaching a counselor or psychiatrist. The resource material we used for awareness generation comprised of videos on some very common mental illnesses like depression, schizophrenia, obsessive compulsive disorder and so on. As I had to play these videos in all the session I would conduct across Western India the symptoms and solutions were on the tip of my tongue. Since then I as an individual have try my best to share this whenever I come across anyone with such symptoms. However, it was never taken seriously by the family or friends. It is very unfortunate that inspite of these illnesses being curable people do not want to talk about it or seek help on such matters due to the stigma and taboo associated with Mental Health issues. My question is why do we let the cases worsen and ultimately lose a dear one due to a mental health concern there are a series of solutions available in and around us."
