Mouth Opening Exercises
It is important to do mouth opening exercises after undergoing the surgery for cancer of mouth. Simple method of exercising involves keeping the thumb of one hand on the upper teeth and index finger of the other hand over lower teeth and force the jaw open by applying pressure on the teeth.

Heister Mouth Gag can be bought online on Amazon. It is better to wrap an electrical insulation tape over the tips of the gag so teeth do not come in contact with metal directly. Place the tips of the gag as far posteriorly as possible on the nonoperated side of the mouth and open by rotating the key, till slight pain is felt. Do not place it between the front teeth as these teeth are not very strong to tolerate the forces generated by the gag. Maintain the open position for half a minute and then take rest of one minute. Repeat for 10 times, which completes one session. At least five such sessions are to be done in a day.

Micro vascular reconstruction has become a gold standard in head and neck cancers. And had also established is utility in beat reconstruction.
I hope that people find the option of Micro vascular reconstruction at all places where they are planning to get the treatment.
And also that the awareness in people is raised so as to understand that their quality of life is going to be decided by the reconstruction.
The cancer surgeon or oncosurgeon, will cut away the diseased tissues which will compromise the function of the mouth. The more he cuts the more will be the compromise. Previously these patients were allied to Heal without reconstruction making them oral cripples and stigmatizing Head and Neck cancer surgery patients.
The only way to reclaim this lost function and prevent them from becoming an oral cripple is to get reconstruction done.
Chest flap or the Pectoralis major myocutaneous flap improved the quality of life of these patients considerably since eighties but Micro vascular surgery had revolutionised the reconstruction to restore almost all the functions since nineties.
I hope that people understand this and demand a Microvascular reconstruction when they see a cancer surgeon or at least a consultation with A Plastic Surgeon who is doing Micro vascular reconstruction.
