Sports and Synergy Take Centre Stage at HBCH&RC Punjab’s 'Metaplasia 2026'

The Annual Sports Festival 'Metaplasia 2026', organized by Homi Bhabha Cancer Hospital & Research Centre, Punjab, concluded on 22 February 2026 with great enthusiasm and spirited participation. The week-long celebration of sportsmanship and teamwork commenced on 16 February 2026 and witnessed vibrant participation from faculty members, resident doctors, nursing officers, students, and staff across departments of both units of New Chandigarh and Sangrur.

The closing ceremony was graced by Dr. Jyotsna Singh, Director of NMIMS, Chandigarh, who attended the event as the Chief Guest. Mr. Sanjeev Sharma, CEO of Utsah Foundation, was also present as a distinguished guest.

Dr. Ashish Gulia, Director of Homi Bhabha Cancer Hospital & Research Centre, Punjab, highlighted the deeper significance of sports in strengthening institutional values. In his address, he stated, "The spirit of sports is closely aligned with team spirit. Just as in patient care, success in any field depends on coordination, trust, and collective effort. When we work together as one team, we achieve stronger and more meaningful outcomes."

Addressing the gathering, Dr. Jyotsna Singh commended the institution for promoting a culture that values both academic excellence and holistic well-being. She said, "Institutions that encourage sports alongside academics create professionals who are not only skilled but also resilient, disciplined, and team-oriented. 'Metaplasia 2026' is a wonderful example of nurturing balanced growth among healthcare professionals."

'Metaplasia 2026' featured a diverse array of indoor and outdoor sporting events, including chess, carrom, push-ups, bench press, races ranging from 100 metres to 1000 metres, slow cycling, spoon race, skipping rope, badminton, table tennis, volleyball, football, and cricket. These activities promoted healthy competition, enthusiasm, and a strong sense of camaraderie among participants.

The festival concluded with the distribution of prizes to the winners, reaffirming the institution’s commitment to nurturing teamwork, physical fitness, and a positive, collaborative work environment.

The successful organization of 'Metaplasia 2026' once again reflected the institution's dedication to promoting physical fitness, unity, and a vibrant organizational culture alongside its core mission of delivering quality cancer care.

Homi Bhabha Cancer Hospital & Research Centre (HBCH&RC), Punjab, successfully concluded a comprehensive Basic Life Support (BLS) AHA Certification Course on 21st February 2026. Organized by the Department of Anaesthesia, Critical Care & Pain, this intensive one-day program at our New Chandigarh campus equipped participants with the essential skills needed to intervene during life-threatening emergencies. The curriculum featured a dynamic blend of didactic lectures and rigorous hands-on training.

Attendees mastered critical life-saving techniques, including high-quality chest compressions, the "Chain of Survival," and the proper use of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED). The sessions also covered bag-mask ventilation, the recovery position, and specific protocols for choking across all age groups.

Reflecting on the events impact, our Patron and Director, Dr. Ashish Gulia, stated, "We are committed to empowering our community with the vital skills necessary to act confidently during medical emergencies, ensuring that every second counts in the mission to save lives."

This course was successfully conducted with the invaluable support of Dr. Manpreet Singh from Government Medical College & Hospital (Sector-32, Chandigarh) and his team of instructors, including esteemed faculty from PGI Chandigarh, AIMS Mohali and GMCH-32.

Homi Bhabha Cancer Hospital & Research Centre, Punjab honoured to participate in the high-level meeting convened by the Health & Medical Education Department, Jammu & Kashmir, to deliberate on the proposed Cancer Control Strategy for the Union Territory.

Dr. Ashish Gulia, Director of the HBCH&RC Punjab, represented the institution and emphasised the need for a well-defined roadmap to address the growing cancer burden, strengthen tertiary care services, bridge human resource gaps, promote research and outcome indicators, and scale up palliative care and public health initiatives.

In collaboration with NITI Aayog, Indian Council of Medical Research and Tata Memorial Centre, the strategy aims to establish a comprehensive, evidence-based and patient-centric framework for cancer prevention, early diagnosis, treatment and research across Jammu & Kashmir.

An Orientation Program and White Coat Ceremony were organized today at the New Chandigarh campus of Homi Bhabha Cancer Hospital & Research Centre for the newly admitted MD students.

On this occasion, while extending his best wishes to the new students enrolled in the MD programs of the Departments of Anaesthesia, Radiation Oncology, and Radiodiagnosis, the Director Principal, Dr. (Prof.) Ashish Gulia, acquainted them with the proud legacy of the Tata Memorial Centre.

Addressing the students, he expressed confidence that the coming years would be meaningful and transformative for them. He emphasized that the institution provides equal opportunities to all students and guides them in building a strong foundation as specialist doctors.

Dr. Ashish Gulia told the new students that the Homi Bhabha Cancer Hospital and Research Centre Punjab is skilling young doctors through its academic courses as part of its ongoing fight against cancer in the region, so that they can join this mission, confront the disease with determination, and serve humanity.

During the Orientation Program, the new students were introduced to their respective medical departments, faculty members, and the academic framework of their courses.

At the Sangrur campus of Homi Bhabha Cancer Hospital & Research Centre, the MD program in Radiation Oncology has been conducted for quite some time. However, at the New Chandigarh campus, this will be the first batch of MD Anaesthesia and MD Radiodiagnosis students.

The Homi Bhabha Cancer Hospital & Research Centre (HBCH&RC) Punjab, successfully concluded a comprehensive three-day observance of Day2026 , marked by educational, clinical, and community engagement activities across its New Chandigarh and Sangrur campuses.

The event commenced with the 'CVAD Excellence Conclave & Skill Workshop', organized by the Department of Nursing. The workshop focused on best practices, risk prevention, complication management, and clinical excellence in CVAD. Nursing professionals and students from multiple institutions actively participated, fostering knowledge exchange and skill development.

The second and third days featured a wide range of educational, awareness, and creative initiatives held at HBCH&RC, New Chandigarh, and HBCH Sangrur. These included the inspiring 'Brave Heart' ramp walk by pediatric cancer warriors, rangoli and poster-making competitions, blood donation drives, preventive screening camps, nukkad natak, quiz competitions, and patient support group activities, collectively promoting cancer awareness, early detection, and community participation.

The observance was graced by the presence of Hon'ble Health Minister of Punjab, Dr. Balbir Singh, who attended as the Chief Guest. During his visit, he conducted an extensive tour of the hospital premises, interacted with patients and their families, and encouraged them with words of support and reassurance. Winners of various awareness and prevention competitions were felicitated by Hon'ble Health Minister of Punjab and Director, HBCH&RC Punjab, in recognition of their contributions to cancer education and advocacy.

Addressing the gathering, Dr. Balbir Singh emphasized, "Cancer is curable if detected early. Along with awareness and a healthy lifestyle, the Punjab Government's ₹10 lakh health coverage scheme ensures that every citizen can access the best possible cancer treatment."

Dr. (Prof.) Ashish Gulia, Director, HBCH&RC Punjab, highlighted that the hospital has emerged as one of the largest state-of-the-art cancer centers in North India. As an extension of the Tata Memorial Centre Mumbai, HBCH&RC New Chandigarh has consistently upheld the highest standards of clinical excellence since its inauguration by Honorable Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2022, reinforcing its role as a leading center for comprehensive cancer care.
