To determine whether a clavicle is from the left or right side, follow these steps:
1. Identify the Two Ends:
Sternal (Medial) End: This end is thicker, more rounded, and articulates with the sternum.
Acromial (Lateral) End: This end is flatter and articulates with the acromion of the scapula.
2. Look for the Curvature:
The clavicle has an S-shape curve when viewed from above.
The medial (sternal) portion curves anteriorly, while the lateral (acromial) portion curves posteriorly.
3. Check the Inferior Surface:
The inferior surface is rough due to muscle and ligament attachments.
Look for the conoid tubercle (a small bump near the acromial end) and the costal tuberosity (a rough area near the sternal end).
The conoid tubercle should be downward and posterior.
4. Orient the Bone Correctly:
Place the sternal end medially and the acromial end laterally.
Ensure the conoid tubercle is on the inferior side.
If the bone curves anteriorly near the sternum and then posteriorly toward the shoulder, you have the correct orientation.
If these conditions are met, you can determine whether it's a right or left clavicle based on which side of the body it fits.
