Behishta Khairudddin, the indomitable 26-year-old from Afghanistan had enrolled in for a Master’s in Chemical Engineering during the tumultuous Taliban takeover of 2021. Stuck in her province in Northern Afghanistan, isolated and confined to her home, she wrote and cleared all her semesters remotely, with extending a long helping hand to her.

She ran lab experiments on borrowed beakers and her sister’s microwave oven in her home and studied chemical engineering on a computer with an unstable Wi-Fi connection for two years. Further she explains about how Prof. Raghunathan Rengasamy and Office of Global Engagement helped her with the scholarship process.

"I want to go to academics and not any industrial job. I can feel the need for an education system in Afghanistan. Now that I have seen the high standards of IIT-Madras, I want to bring this standard to my country,” Behishta said.

After the recent incidents in IIT Madras, a lot of pressure was there from the students demanding proactive action from the administration. Students has also pointed out that they are not comfortable talking to the wellness center, which comes under the admin. Responding to our demnads to do a complete wellness survey in the campus, Director, IITM has taken steps for such a survey by an external body which intends to reach out to not only the whole student community, but also the faculties and staff of the campus. As responsible students of the campus, now it is our duty to participate in this survey so that something meaningful can come out of it. We should participate in the survey in large numbers once it begins.
