The 5 S Method is a popular and practical technique to calm crying newborns.
1. Swaddle
Wrap the baby snugly in a soft blanket.
2. Side or Stomach Position (for soothing only)
3. 3. Shush (White Noise)
Make a gentle “shhh… shhh…” sound near the baby’s ear or use soft white noise.
4. Swing
Use gentle rhythmic movements:
• Rocking
• Slow swinging
• Walking while holding the baby
5. Suck
Allow the baby to suck on the breast, finger
• Sucking activates a natural calming reflex in babies.

“When babies cry, remember the 5 S’s – Swaddle, Side position, Shush, Swing, and Suck. These remind the baby of the womb and help them feel safe again.”

Understanding baby’s CRY
• Crying is the baby’s main way of communicating.
• Common reasons: hunger, wet diaper, gas, tiredness, need for comfort.
• Holding and soothing the baby is normal and healthy.
. Not all cry is for feeding, so if you have just fed the baby look for other reasons

Newborns
Frequent hiccups, sneezing, spitting up, jitteriness when crying, and startling (Moro reflex) are all normal and usually subside by three months.

Skin-to-skin contact ❤️
• Holding the baby against the parent’s chest helps:
• bonding
• temperature regulation
• breastfeeding succes.

Parents must care for themselves too
• Rest when the baby sleeps.
• Ask family for help.
• Emotional changes after birth are common—support is important.

NEW BORN BABIES
Feed the baby on demand
• Newborns usually feed every 2–3 hours.
• Breast milk is the best nutrition for the baby.
• Look for hunger cues: sucking hands, lip smacking, rooting.

Maintain hygiene
• Wash hands before touching the baby.
• Keep the umbilical cord stump clean and dry until it falls off.

Focus on safe sleep 😴
• Always put the baby on their back to sleep.
• Use a firm mattress with no pillows, toys, or loose blankets.
• Babies sleep 15–17 hours a day, but in short cycles.
