The World Health Organization (WHO) defines traditional medicine as: "the health practices, approaches, knowledge and beliefs incorporating plant, animal and mineral-based medicines, spiritual therapies, manual techniques and exercises, applied singularly or in combination to treat, diagnose and prevent illnesses or maintain well-being. Out of these Siddha Medicine is one of the oldest medical systems known to mankind. Contemporary Tamizh literature holds that the system of Siddha medicine originated in Southern India, in the state of Tamil Nadu, as part of the trio Indian medicines - Ayurveda, Siddha and Unani. The Recognized Graduate degree named BSMS (Bachelor of Siddha Medicine and Surgery) come under the Department of Ayurveda, Yoga and Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homoeopathy (AYUSH), Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India. According to the siddha medicine system, diet and lifestyle play a major role, not only in health but also in curing diseases. This concept of the siddha medicine is termed as pathiyam and apathiyam, which is essentially a list of "do's and dont's". In Tamilnadu, There are 2 Government and 5+ Private Siddha institution, National institute of Siddha(only PG) teaching the Siddha with Experienced Staffs. The C.R.R.I. shall be completed in the teaching hospital/Siddha hospitals wherever available in the state (Dispensaries and Primary Health Centres) for the period of 12 months after passing the final examination by rotation.
