Graves' Disease is an autoimmune disorder that causes the overproduction of thyroid hormones, leading to a condition called hyperthyroidism. It is one of the most common causes of hyperthyroidism and occurs when the immune system mistakenly attacks the thyroid gland, causing it to become overactive.
Key Symptoms:
Weight loss despite normal or increased appetite
Rapid heartbeat or palpitations
Increased sweating and sensitivity to heat
Nervousness, irritability, or anxiety
Tremors (shaking hands or fingers)
Fatigue or muscle weakness
Bulging eyes (exophthalmos), a hallmark of Graves’ orbitopathy
Goiter (enlarged thyroid gland)
Causes:
Graves’ disease is caused by the production of thyroid-stimulating immunoglobulins (TSI), which mimic the action of the thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) and lead to excessive thyroid hormone production.
Risk Factors:
Family history of autoimmune disorders
Being female (women are more likely to develop it)
Stress or infections triggering immune responses
Other autoimmune conditions (e.g., rheumatoid arthritis or type 1 diabetes)
Diagnosis:
Blood tests to check thyroid hormone levels (T3, T4) and TSH levels
Antibody tests to detect TSI
Thyroid scan or radioactive iodine uptake test
Treatment Options:
Medications:
Antithyroid drugs (e.g., methimazole) to reduce hormone production.
Beta-blockers to control symptoms like rapid heartbeat.
Radioactive iodine therapy: Shrinks the thyroid gland by damaging overactive thyroid cells.
Surgery: Thyroidectomy to remove part or all of the thyroid gland in severe cases.
Lifestyle adjustments: Managing stress, eating a balanced diet, and regular follow-ups.
