𝗗𝗶𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁𝘀 𝗲𝗹𝗱𝗲𝗿𝗹𝘆 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗮𝗳𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗿𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁?
It is not health or money. It’s the loss of purpose, feeling forgotten and loneliness. When roles fade and routines vanish, many elders begin to feel invisible and feel they’re no longer needed the way they once were.

Let’s help them stay connected and contribute to healthy ageing. Here are 5 small steps. Pick any of them and get started.

𝟭. 𝗔 𝗱𝗮𝗶𝗹𝘆 𝟭𝟬 𝗺𝗶𝗻𝘀 𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗰𝗸-𝗶𝗻
Ask about their day, what did go well and what didn't.

𝟮. 𝗜𝗻𝘃𝗼𝗹𝘃𝗲 𝗧𝗵𝗲𝗺 𝗶𝗻 𝗗𝗲𝗰𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀
Ask for their opinion on things like family plans, finances, or even food recipes. It reinforces their role and value.

𝟯. 𝗗𝗼 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗦𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗔𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗮 𝗱𝗮𝘆
Schedule one small shared task: a walk, a chai break, or watching a short funny video together.

𝟰. 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻 𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗻𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝘆
Teach them how to use WhatsApp, YouTube, or a hobby app for entertainment and a gateway to connect with others.

𝟱. 𝗣𝘂𝗿𝗽𝗼𝘀𝗲
Help them find a small daily goal like taking care of the garden, mentoring kids, writing memories etc.

𝗟𝗼𝗻𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗜𝘀𝗻’𝘁 𝗝𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗶𝗻 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗠𝗶𝗻𝗱 — 𝗜𝘁 𝗛𝘂𝗿𝘁𝘀 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗣𝗼𝗰𝗸𝗲𝘁 𝗧𝗼𝗼

In India, loneliness is often dismissed as “𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗮 𝗽𝗵𝗮𝘀𝗲” or something you will hear people saying "𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗲𝗿 𝘂𝗽 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗶𝘁 𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗯𝗲 𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗲.” But what if we told you that chronic loneliness doesn’t just affect your emotional well-being—𝗶𝘁 𝗵𝗮𝘀 𝗮 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗹, 𝗺𝗲𝗮𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝘀𝘁?

While 𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗹𝗶𝗸𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗨𝗞 have already started quantifying the impact of loneliness on mental health, physical health, and productivity—𝗽𝘂𝘁𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝗶𝗴𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝘁 £𝟵,𝟵𝟳𝟲 (𝗮𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱 ₹𝟭𝟬 𝗹𝗮𝗸𝗵) 𝗽𝗲𝗿 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗼𝗻 𝗽𝗲𝗿 𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿—India still lacks concrete data on how loneliness affects us economically.

This is not about putting a price tag on pain. It's about understanding that loneliness silently drains our lives—not just emotionally, but financially too. From increased medical bills to lower productivity and absenteeism at work, the ripple effects are real.

If reducing loneliness can have the s𝗮𝗺𝗲 𝘄𝗲𝗹𝗹-𝗯𝗲𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁 𝗮𝘀 𝗮 𝗺𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝘀𝗮𝗹𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝗵𝗶𝗸𝗲, shouldn’t we be paying more attention?

At Lisners, we believe it’s time India starts asking these questions. 𝗪𝗲 𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗼𝗻 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗿𝘀, 𝗽𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗰𝘆𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗲𝗿𝘀, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵 𝗮𝗱𝘃𝗼𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗲𝘀 to initiate similar studies—so that we can raise awareness, design better interventions, and ultimately treat loneliness for what it truly is: 𝗮 𝗽𝘂𝗯𝗹𝗶𝗰 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵 𝗶𝘀𝘀𝘂𝗲 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗹 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗲𝗾𝘂𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲𝘀.

Let’s stop treating loneliness as invisible. Let’s start seeing the whole picture.
