The symptoms of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) can be pretty debilitating. It is a mental disorder characterized by intrusive thoughts that cause distress and often lead to repetitive behaviors or rituals. The symptoms of OCD can vary from person to person. Some common symptoms include:
• Excessive Washing of hands, fear of contamination
• Excessive counting
• Repetitive checking of door and lock.
• Obsession regarding symmetry
•Fear of causing harm to self or others
•Mental Rituals
OCD treatment consists of four components: -
1. Cognitive Therapy
2. Exposure and Response Prevention
3. Medication
4. Supportive Therapy
These help patients identify and change the faulty thoughts that contribute to their OCD symptoms. Exposure and Response Prevention exposes patients to their fear and preventing the compulsive part hence they learn to stop their compulsive behavior.
