Honey could be an effective remedy for nighttime cough. It jas a potential to perform as well as, or even better than, over-the-counter cough syrups for reducing coughing and improving sleep quality, especially for children over the age of one. The thick, soothing nature of honey coats the throat, which can reduce irritation, and it has anti-inflammatory properties that help break down mucus. It is a safe and accessible alternative to medication, although it should not be given to infants under one year old due to the risk of botulism.

*However, if coughing persists, it's important to consult a healthcare professional to rule out any underlying medical conditions.*

Pica is an eating disorder characterized by a compulsive and persistent craving for and consumption of non-food substances with no nutritional value, such as dirt, clay, glue, and paper. It is not considered a disorder if the behavior is culturally acceptable or occurs in children under two, who frequently put objects in their mouths as part of normal development.

Pica often goes away on its own in children and pregnant women, but for some, especially those with intellectual disabilities, it can persist longer and require ongoing management.

Both the smallest bone, Stapes, and the smallest muscle, Stapedius, are present in the middle part of the ear and they are the ones responsible for our proper hearing.

The stapes, or "stirrup" bone, transmits sound vibrations to the inner ear, while the stapedius muscle attaches to the stapes, stabilizing the bone and protecting the ear from loud noises by controlling its vibrations.

To protect the stapes and stapedius muscle, *avoid exposure to loud noises*, as this may damage the delicate structures of the middle ear. Regular hearing protection, *such as wearing earplugs in loud environments*, can prevent noise-induced hearing loss. If you have a condition like *otosclerosis or experience symptoms of middle ear dysfunction*, consult an ENT specialist for diagnosis and appropriate treatment, which may involve surgery to preserve the stapedius tendon and ossicles.

*If you experience symptoms like hearing loss, ringing in your ears (tinnitus), or a sensation of fullness in your ear, consult an ear, nose, and throat (ENT) specialist doctor immediately.*

During the Middle Ages and Renaissance, barbers also served as surgeons. Known as "barber-surgeons," they were responsible for a range of surgical & medical tasks.

This dual role existed because physicians and surgeons were considered very different types of professionals.

Before the 13th century, monks performed many of the surgical tasks, but in 1215 a papal decree prohibited the clergy from any procedures that involved the shedding of blood. This created an opportunity for barbers, who already possessed sharp razors and manual dexterity, to fill the void.

The separation of barbers and surgeons finally took place in 1745 when a separate College of Surgeons was set up in England. Gradually barbers were phased out of medico-surgical tasks.

Major lifestyle factors that require more anesthesia during surgery and more painkillers for recovery (post-procedure) include chronic opioid use, heavy alcohol consumption, obesity, chronic smoking, and illicit drug use.

Mental health conditions and a sedentary lifestyle are also significant risk factors.

Using more anesthesia or high doses of painkillers has a potential to cause severe, widespread, and potentially fatal damage to the body's systems, especially the heart, brain, liver, and lungs.

A tongue that is smoother than normal, a condition known as atrophic glossitis, can be caused by deficiencies in iron, folic acid, and vitamin B12.

However, it is not the only cause, as other factors (such as infections, allergies or systemic or autoimmune diseases) can also lead to a smooth tongue.

Make it a habit to take a nutritious diet rich in iron, B vitamins (B1, B2, B3, B6, B9, B12), zinc, and vitamin C, and practice good oral hygiene with regular brushing and dental visits.

Lifestyle choices such as avoiding smoking and excessive alcohol, staying hydrated, and limiting sugary drinks are also crucial preventative measures.

*However, please consult your doctor immediately if you feel you have a smooth tongue.*

Turbinates are crucial structures inside the nose that warm, humidify, and filter inhaled air to protect the lungs from dry, cold air, which the lungs are unable to tolerate.

Problems with the turbinates, such as chronic inflammation (turbinate hypertrophy), can obstruct normal breathing, leading to mouth breathing. Turbinates are vital to the respiratory system.

*Keeping turbinates healthy*
According to experts. turbinates can be kept healthy by managing environmental irritants, avoiding smoke and allergens, using a humidifier for moist air, and practicing good nasal hygiene with saline rinses. Additionally, controlling allergies with nasal steroid sprays, antihistamines, or allergy shots may reduce inflammation. *For problems with turbinates, immediately consult a doctor for potential treatments like immunotherapy or, in some cases, surgery to reduce turbinate size.*

*Patient safety from the start!*

Wishing you on World Patient Safety Day: The theme of 2025 is “*Safe care for every newborn and every child.*”

Key parameters of child patient safety include factors related to the child's unique characteristics, the treatment centre’s overall safety culture, and specific clinical processes.

Since children are not just "small adults," their rapid development, size variations, and inability to communicate their needs make them especially vulnerable to medical omissions.

Our empanelled treatment centres recognise that a strong patient safety culture is essential for reducing harm and relies on institutional commitment, leadership, and resources.

According to studies, decreased sense of smell may indicate an impending Alzheimer’s or Parkinson’s disease.

In Alzheimer’s, the loss of smell is linked to the buildup of amyloid and tau proteins in brain regions connected to both smell and memory. These pathological changes, particularly in the olfactory bulb and entorhinal cortex, are among the earliest to appear at the onset of this disease.

In Parkinson’s, abnormal alpha synuclein protein begins to accumulate in the olfactory bulb, disrupting a person's sense of smell before it affects motor function.

Many people are unaware they have lost their sense of smell until they are formally tested, so it may go unnoticed for years.

However, while a decreased sense of smell can be a warning sign for these neurodegenerative diseases, it is not a definitive diagnosis on its own.

The ability to smell can diminish due to many factors, including viral infections (like COVID-19), nasal or sinus conditions, head injuries, certain medications, and normal aging.

*If you feel your sense of smell is getting compromised, please immediately consult with your local doctor.*

A significant portion of the primary motor cortex of the human brain (about a quarter of it) is devoted to the hands and fingers, reflecting the complexity and dexterity required for tasks like typing, writing, and playing musical instruments. This high degree of neural representation is not based on the physical size of the hands but on the richness and complexity of the motor control needed for their many fine movements and sensory connections.

If the human cortex is unhealthy our movements and ability to function suffers. While once damaged, motor cortex treatment / management is handled by a neurologist, the following lifestyle acts may help keeping it healthy:

* Regular physical exercise
* Participation in mentally challenging activities and mental stimulation (such as, learning a new language or musical instrument, solving puzzles like Sudoku, playing video games, etc).
* Regular consumption of nutrient—rich diet (including, foods with omega-3 fatty acids, antioxidants and B-vitamins, etc).
* Regular quality sleep
* Stress management

Lack of adequate sleep (or sleep deprivation) may not cause death directly, it contributes to the development of fatal diseases that may lead to death if not addressed in time.

The Impact of Sleep Deprivation: Sleep deprivation, especially long term, doesn't directly cause death but significantly increases the risk of fatal health conditions.
* Increased Health Risks: Chronic lack of sleep is a known risk factor for conditions like:
* Heart disease and hypertension
* Stroke
* Type 2 diabetes and impaired glucose tolerance
* Obesity
* Certain cancers
* Accidents and Impairment: Sleep deprivation impairs cognitive function and motor skills, leading to potentially fatal accidents in workplaces and on the road.

*Even in cases of severe insomnia, the body will eventually force itself to sleep, making death from complete lack of sleep in humans unlikely.*

Hugging a human gives a good feel because of the hormone secreted by the brain called Oxytocin, the love hormone.

Oxytocin is a neurotransmitter produced in the brain's hypothalamus and released by the pituitary gland, promoting social bonding and increasing mood, making hugs feel good.

However the following ailments may cause low levels of oxytocin secretion and contribute to the feeling of gloom & doom:

* Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)
* Prader-Willi Syndrome (PWS)
* Depression
* Anxiety and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
* Pituitary Gland Disorders
* Reproductive Issues
* Anorexia Nervosa
