World Braille Day on January 4 is celebrated to honour the birth of Braille's inventor, Louis Braille. Braille's invention in the world has brightened the lives of millions of people who are blind or visually impaired, and they benefit from its usage every day.
Braille is a tactile representation of alphabetic and numerical symbols using six dots to represent each letter and number, and even musical, mathematical and scientific symbols. Blind and partially sighted people use
Braille to read the same books and periodicals as those printed in a visual font.
Braille is essential in the context of education, freedom of expression and opinion, as well as a strategy of social inclusion, as reflected in article 2 of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.

We, the Disabled Students Association at Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi (DSA, JNU), are deeply saddened by the untimely demise of Prof. Anita Ghai (Disability Rights Activist and retired Professor at Ambedkar University, Delhi), a pioneer in the discipline of disability studies as an interdisciplinary subject and an eminent scholar. Prof. Ghai's profound contributions to disability studies and her tireless advocacy for an inclusive and accessible society have inspired students, scholars, advocates of disability rights and activists alike.

Her critical insights, drawing on an intersectional approach to disability, gender, and policy initiatives impacting the everyday lives of disabled people, have left an enduring impact, shaping the disability rights discourse on inclusion and equity in the cross-sectional disability rights movement and women's movement in India. Prof. Ghai's legacy will guide us in our sustained struggle for disability rights and justice to ensure accessibility as a rightful claim of every person with a disability in the state and society.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to her family, friends, and all those whose lives she enriched through her academic endeavours and disability rights activism. Her journey as a person with a disability and a firm believer in the principle of social justice will remain a guiding light in our disabled community's collective journey toward making efforts for an inclusive, accessible and respectful society and diverse institutional actors of the state.

हम, जवाहरलाल नेहरू विश्वविद्यालय, नई दिल्ली (जेएनयू) के विकलांग छात्र संघ (डीएसए), प्रोफेसर अनीता घई (अंबेडकर विश्वविद्यालय, दिल्ली से सेवानिवृत्त) के असमय निधन से अत्यंत दुखी हैं। प्रोफेसर घई ने विकलांगता अध्ययन को एक अंतःविषय विषय के रूप में स्थापित करने में अग्रणी भूमिका निभाई और एक प्रमुख अध्येता के रूप में अपनी पहचान बनाई । विकलांगता अध्ययन एवं समावेशी और सुलभ समाज की वकालत के क्षेत्र में उनके अमूल्य योगदान ने छात्रों, विद्वानों, सामाजिक अधिकार कार्यकर्ताओं और विकलांगता अधिकार समर्थकों को प्रेरित किया है।

उनके आलोचनात्मक दृष्टिकोण (जो विकलांगता, जेंडर, और उनके नीतिगत पहलों के बीच अंतर्संबंधों पर आधारित थे) ने विकलांग लोगों के दैनिक जीवन के विभिन्न पहलुओं पर भी व्यापक प्रभाव डाला। उन्होंने समावेशन और समानता पर केंद्रित विकलांगता अधिकार आंदोलन और महिला आंदोलन में एक महती भूमिका निभाई । प्रोफेसर घई की विरासत हमें विकलांगता अधिकार और न्याय की लड़ाई में हमें हमेशा प्रेरित करती रहेगी ताकि हर विकलांग व्यक्ति के लिए राज्य और समाज में सुलभता का उनका अधिकार सुनिश्चित किया जा सके।

डिसेबल्ड स्टूडेंट्स एसोसिएशन जवाहरलाल नेहरू विश्वविद्यालय (ज.ने.वि) समुदाय को व्हाइट केन सुरक्षा दिवस की हार्दिक बधाई प्रेषित करता है. यह दिन दृष्टिबाधित लोगों के जीवन में ऐतिहासिक महत्व रखता है, जो विविध स्थानों-संस्थानों में उनकी स्वतंत्रता को सुनिश्चित करने वाले मूल्यों को स्थापित करता है. सफेद छड़ी न केवल दृष्टिबाधित लोगों के लिए एक सहायक उपकरण है, बल्कि यह उनकी स्वायत्तता सुनिश्चित करती है और उनके स्वतंत्र रूप से चलने-फिरने के अधिकार का प्रतीक भी है। यह सार्वजनिक स्थानों तक समान पहुंच और समावेशिता का प्रतीक है; जो भारत के संविधान में निहित मौलिक अधिकारों और विकलांगजन अधिकार अधिनियम (RPWD अधिनियम, 2016) के वैधानिक प्रावधानों में उल्लेखित हैं, जिन्हें राज्य और समाज को सुनिश्चित करना आवश्यक है।

सफेद छड़ी सुरक्षित गतिशीलता, समान अवसर और समाज में पूर्ण समावेशन के अधिकार का प्रतिनिधित्व करती है, जैसा कि संयुक्त राष्ट्र विकलांगजन अधिकार सम्मेलन (UNCRPD) में गारंटी दी गई है, जिसे भारत सरकार ने 2006-07 में अनुमोदित किया था।

जागरूकता पैदा करने के लिए यह एक महत्वपूर्ण दिन है;-

समाज को शिक्षित करना:- बहुत से लोग दृष्टिबाधित व्यक्तियों के जीवन में सफेद छड़ी के महत्व से अवगत नहीं होते हैं। इसके महत्व को समझकर, हम एक अधिक सहायक और सुलभ दुनिया का निर्माण कर सकते हैं।

सम्मान और सुरक्षा:- ड्राइवरों, पैदल यात्रियों, और सार्वजनिक सुविधाओं को सफेद छड़ी को एक संकेत के रूप में पहचानना चाहिए कि इसका उपयोग करने वाला व्यक्ति स्वतंत्र रूप से और अवरोध-रहित चलने-फिरने का अधिकार रखता है। इस सहायक उपकरण के प्रति सम्मान डिसेबल्ड व्यक्ति की सुरक्षा और सशक्तिकरण सुनिश्चित करता है।

अधिकारों की वकालत करना:- सफेद छड़ी सुरक्षा दिवस हमें डिसेबल्ड व्यक्तियों के अधिकारों के लिए खड़े होने की याद दिलाता है, जिससे हम अपनी प्रतिनिधि आवाज़ द्वारा राज्य और समाज से अपने अधिकारों की माँग कर सकें।

WHITE CANE SAFETY DAY

Disabled Students Association (JNU, New Delhi) greets everyone in the JNU campus community and society with a very happy White Cane Saftey Day. This day is marked by historical significance in the lives of visually impaired people, which signifies the value of independent living by navigating diverse spaces. The White Cane is not only an assistive aid to ensure the autonomy of people with visual impairment but also a symbol of our right to free movement and a barrier-free environment. It serves as an emblem of inclusivity and equal access to public spaces; the values enshrined in the fundamental rights of the Constitution of India and statutory provisions of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act (RPWD Act, 2016); which the state & society obliged to ensure.
The white cane represents the right to safe mobility, the right to equal opportunity, and the right to full inclusion in society, as guaranteed under the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD), which has been ratified by the Government of India in 2006-07.

A Day is important for creating Awareness

Educating Society:-Many people are unaware of the importance of the white cane in the lives of visually impaired individuals. Understanding its significance can create a more supportive and accessible world.

Respect and Safety:-Drivers, pedestrians, and public facilities should recognize the white cane as a signal of someone who has the right of free & independent movement without causing barriers and by removing existing ones”. Respect for this assistive aid ensures safety and empowerment.

Advocating for Rights:- White Cane Safety Day reminds us to stand up for the rights of people with disabilities, allowing us to make claims on state and society by our representative voice.

जागरूकता बढ़ाना: विकलांग छात्रों के लिए पहुंच और सुरक्षा उपाय सुनिश्चित करने की तत्काल आवश्यकता

विकलांग छात्र संघ (डीएसए, जेएनयू) आज सुबह हुई एक दुर्भाग्यपूर्ण घटना के बारे में सभी को सूचित करना चाहता है। कावेरी छात्रावास और गोदावरी छात्रावास के बीच पैदल पथ पर खड़े एक ऑटो रिक्शा की वजह से एक दृष्टिबाधित छात्र दुर्घटना का शिकार हो गया, जो परिसर की मुख्य सड़क से जुड़ता है। डीएसए प्रशासन की संवेदनशीलता की कमी और विकलांग छात्रों के लिए परिसर की पहुँच सुनिश्चित करने के अपर्याप्त प्रयासों के कारण उत्पन्न खतरनाक स्थिति की कड़ी निंदा करता है। इसमें स्पर्शनीय पथों को ठीक से स्थापित करना और इन पथों और आस-पास की सड़कों पर वाहनों और बाइकों की पार्किंग पर प्रतिबंध लगाना शामिल होना चाहिए था। पीड़ित और हमारा विकलांग समुदाय दोनों ही अपने बचाव एवं सुरक्षा के बारे में गहराई से चिंतित हैं, जो हमारे शिक्षण और सीखने की गतिविधियों और स्वतंत्र रूप से घूमने की हमारी क्षमता के लिए बेहद आवश्यक है।

इस दुर्भाग्यपूर्ण घटना के बाद, हम मांग करते हैं कि जेएनयू प्रशासन संवेदनशीलता और जागरूकता अभियानों को गंभीरता से ले। तत्काल कार्रवाई में उचित संकेत (साइन बोर्ड ) लगाना और विकलांग छात्रों द्वारा अक्सर आने जाने वाले स्थानों पर सुरक्षा कर्मचारियों को तैनात करना शामिल होना चाहिए। इसके अतिरिक्त, प्रशासन को गैर-विकलांग छात्रों, शिक्षकों, कर्मचारियों और परिसर के निवासियों सहित विभिन्न हितधारकों को शिक्षित करना चाहिए कि कैसे उनके कार्य - जैसे कि गैर-निर्दिष्ट क्षेत्रों में आवारा कुत्तों को खाना खिलाना और टेक्टाइल रास्तों पर पार्किंग करना - विकलांग लोगों की सुरक्षा और संरक्षा के लिए जोखिम पैदा करते हैं। हम प्रशासन से सहयोग की आशा करते हैं तथा अनुरोध करते हैं कि वे पीड़िता को सभी आवश्यक चिकित्सा सहायता प्रदान करें।

Raising Awareness: Urgent Need for Ensure Accessibility and Safety Measures for Disabled Students

The Disabled Students Association (DSA, JNU) would like to inform everyone about an unfortunate incident that occurred this morning. A student with visual impairment was involved in an accident caused by an auto rickshaw parked on a pedestrian path between Kaveri Hostel and Godavari Hostel, which connects to the main road of the campus. The DSA strongly condemns the hazardous situation resulting from the administration's lack of sensitization and inadequate efforts to ensure campus accessibility for students with disabilities. This should have included properly installing tactile paths and prohibiting the parking of vehicles and bikes on these paths and nearby roads.

Both the victims and our disabled community are deeply concerned about our safety and security, which is essential for our teaching and learning activities and our ability to move freely and independently.

Following this unfortunate incident, we demand that the JNU administration take sensitization and awareness campaigns seriously. Immediate actions should include installing appropriate signage and deploying security staff at locations frequented by students with disabilities. Additionally, the administration should educate various stakeholders, including non-disabled students, faculty, staff, and campus residents, on how their actions—such as feeding stray dogs in non-designated areas and parking on tactile paths—pose risks to the safety and security of people with disabilities.
We hope for the administration's kind cooperation and request that they provide all necessary medical assistance to the victim.

DISABLED STUDENTS ASSOCIATION (DSA, JNU)

Dear Friends,
Disabled Students Association (DSA, JNU) is a cross-disability rights advocacy organization aiming to create disability discourse in higher education institutions. We aim to ensure higher education institutions such as JNU become more inclusive and accessible to students with and without disabilities by ensuring representation of diverse disabilities with a special focus on students with high support needs.
We are pleased to extend an opportunity where preference will be given to Students with Disability and to students who have an area of interest/or topic concerning the discipline of disability studies intersecting with other major social science and humanities disciplines to get a hands-on experience of Interviews for the PhD programme in JNU.
The Research Scholars who will conduct interviews will be drawn from Central universities such as Jawaharlal Nehru University, and English and Foreign Language University. Hyderabad Central University, Delhi University; from the disciplines of social science such as Political Science, Hindi Literature, Sociology, Economics, History, English Literature, Cultural Studies, Women's Studies etc. The research scholars who will be conducting these mock interviews are been drawn from the discipline of disability studies intersecting with their major discipline of PhD. Although, we understand we have a limited reach in the disciplines of natural sciences and applied science; however, upon receipt of the applications from students with disabilities, we will make our best efforts to reach out to research scholars from these disciplines for further guidance.
We encourage more and more students with disabilities, to get benefited from this opportunity as the university is starting its interviews from 21st December to 28 December 2023.
Kindly fill out the attached Google form, to help us understand your disciplinary background, area of interest, topic of research, methodological leanings etc. We will make our best efforts to support diverse academic and reasonable accommodation needs in this limited time, we expect your kind cooperation in this endeavour to strengthen disability rights discourse in higher education institutions.
Upon filling out the form, we will get back to you for your mock interviews (preferably through Email or your contact no) with a stipulated date and time before your actual interview of date and time through online mode of Google Meet platform.
