“I’m fine” is one of the most misunderstood sentences in a relationship.
Because sometimes it means exactly that. And sometimes it really, really doesn’t.
In the follicular phase, “I’m fine” is usually honest. Energy is higher, emotions feel more proportional, and it’s easier to communicate what’s going on. Estrogen is rising, which supports serotonin and cognitive clarity. Things feel steadier.
In the luteal phase, “I’m fine” can mean “I’m overwhelmed and I don’t have the energy to explain it.” Emotions can feel heavier, reactions more intense, and patience thinner. Progesterone rises and then drops, and serotonin can dip, which makes everything feel closer to the surface.
Same words. Different biology. Completely different meaning.
So instead of pushing for an explanation, try asking: do you want comfort, space, or solutions?
Send this to someone who needs to understand what “I’m fine” actually means for you.
