CARCINOMA CERVIX
A second most common cause of Cancer in Indian females. Almost 24% of all cases of cancer in India, next only to Breast cancer.
It’s usually caused by Human papillomavirus in >90% of cases.
It is one of the few cancers which can be prevented by a simple vaccination.
Centre for Disease Control Recommendations US
CDC Recommends Human Papilloma Virus vaccination at age 11/12 years and upto the age of 26, if not vaccinated earlier
This can prevent not only Cervical cancers but also cancers of the a**l ca**l, v***a, va**na, and Oro-pharynx.
Prevents the incidence of Ge***al HPV infections as well.
Doses
Age 15 years
Three injections within 6-9months of the first dose
Can we vaccinate females who are sexually active ?
Ideally best protection if vaccinated before female becomes sexually active.
If done after, protection would be less, but never the less should be given as the female may be infected by other strains of HPV
Vaccination during pregnancy
Avoid any vaccination during pregnancy, complete the vaccination schedule after delivery if required.
Does the female require any screening before HPV vaccination ?
No, it’s not mandatory or recommended for any screening for HPV or PAP smear, but should continue the screening for cervical cancer as recommended for age.
How effective is HPV vaccination?�Its very effective for common strains of Human papilloma virus
How long does the vaccine protection last?
Research suggest that vaccine protection is long lasting.
What does the vaccine DOESN’T protect against ?
The vaccine doesn’t protect against all types of HPV strains, but cover all those strains which are most commonly found.
Side effects of HPV vaccination
Mild side effects like fever, dizziness, pain at local area, nausea, numbness and sensitivity
Majority of side effects are self limiting and doesn’t require major intervention or hospitalisation.
Beyond 26 years HPV vaccinations ? YES / NO
Not recommended any vaccination beyond 26 years of age, as benefit is limited. It’s recommended to screen for Cervical cancer instead.
Do vaccinated females requires screening ?
Yes, vaccinated females are recommended to continue screening as before for their age
