heart problems in newborn babies are serious—but early planning can save lives.
One such condition is TAPVC – Total Anomalous Pulmonary Venous Connection.
In this condition, the blood vessels bringing oxygen-rich blood from the lungs connect abnormally to the heart.
The good news is—TAPVC can often be suspected before birth with a foetal echocardiography, a special ultrasound of the baby’s heart done during pregnancy.
If this diagnosis is made early, we can plan the delivery at a tertiary care hospital where:
• Neonatal ICU is available
• Paediatric cardiology and cardiac surgery teams are ready
• Immediate stabilization and timely surgery can be arranged
This advance planning greatly improves survival and outcomes for these babies.
So remember—early foetal heart screening, timely diagnosis, and planned delivery at the right centre can truly save a newborn’s life.
If you have any doubts during pregnancy, please talk to your doctor about foetal echocardiography.”
