🎯LATERAL ANKLE SPRAINS! POST #1 JUST THE BASICS
This is a hypersupination injury. The anterior talofibular ligament and calcaneofibular ligament are the most common structures involved. However, there are several other structures that can be involved including but not limited to : posterior talofibular ligament, lateral subtalor ligament , extensor retinaculum, peroneal retinaculum, peroneal tendons, sural nerve, and superficial branch of the peroneal nerve.

Mechanism of injury: ankle is in plantar flexion when the patient perhaps steps in a hole or off a curb or on an uneven surface. Lateral cutting motions of court sports.

Phases:
acute pain and swelling: 1-2 weeks
Post acute healing: up to 12 months
Chronic ankle instability: >12 months

Physical Exam: anterior drawer test and talar tilt test.

Injury grading:
grade 1 no loss of function , negative anterior drawer and talar tilt
grade 2 some loss of function, positive anterior drawer, negative talar tilt, hemorrhaging, point tenderness, decreased ROM >5 degrees but 10degrees and swelling >2cm

****Limited neuromuscular control is a consequence of ankle sprain and a predictor of future ankle sprains. To be covered in upcoming post.
