The Future of Hearing Healthcare: Where AI Meets Sound

The intersection of AI, biomedical engineering, and medical science is transforming the way we understand and treat hearing loss. But how exactly?

✅ How do GPUs power next-gen hearing aids?
✅ How do Deep Neural Networks improve speech clarity for those with poor speech discrimination?
✅ How does computational science help the brain process and interpret sound more effectively?

With rapid advancements in hearing technology, it’s crucial for doctors to stay ahead and integrate these innovations into patient care. Sonova Group a global leader in hearing solutions, recently hosted a conclave exploring the future of AI-driven hearing healthcare—a watershed moment in the field.

Dr Ksh*tij Malik was honored to have been a panelist at this event, sharing insights on the challenges faced by individuals with hearing loss and the evolving solutions that can change lives.

A heartfelt thank you to Sonova for recognizing the dedication of Dr. Tushar Malik and Dr. Ksh*tij Malik toward patient care.

The future of hearing healthcare is here, and it’s driven by technology, collaboration, and innovation.

Last week, the CREST Neurology Conclave in Delhi brought together over 600 neurologists from across India and beyond for an engaging exchange of knowledge and expertise.

The event focused on a wide range of neurological conditions, including headaches, migraines, movement disorders, and ataxias, with eminent speakers sharing valuable insights. Among the many sessions, one topic that sparked particular enthusiasm was vertigo and dizziness.

Dr Ksh*tij Malik had the privilege of conducting a workshop on this subject, where he delved into the diagnostic investigations and their significance in managing patients with dizziness.

It was an incredible opportunity to contribute to this vibrant community of specialists and discuss advancements in the field. Looking forward to continuing these conversations!

It was an absolute pleasure to conduct a session on Diagnosing Vestibular Lesions during the 13th ENT Update, organized by Maulana Azad Medical College, for young postgraduate students.

It was especially gratifying to have been able to hold their interest and attention during the final session of the day. Tricky business, taking the last talk before the day ends. :)

The 29th edition of the annual Haryana State AOIcon witnessed the enthusiasm of several young doctors eager to learn more about dizziness and vertigo. The instructional course on the subject, conducted by Dr. Srinivas Dorasala , Dr Avinash Bijlani, and Dr Ksh*tij Malik, focused on teaching the basics of diagnosing and treating BPPV, as well as using and interpreting the results of investigations such as VNG and COG.

Thank you Dr Raman Sharma, the Organising Secretary for the invitation. Teaching is undoubtedly one of the most effective ways to learn.

We recently concluded the 42nd National Conference of the Neuro-Otological & Equilibriometric Society of India : at SGPGI, Lucknow. Organised by the very capable Dr Amit Keshri and attended by more than 400 medical professionals working in the field of Vertigo and Balance, there was an incredibly healthy exchange of knowledge and skills at the 3 halls at SGPGI Auditoriums spread over 3 days.

As the Hon. Secretary of this prestigious society, Dr Ksh*tij Malik would like to congratulate the entire organising team at SGPGI, Association of Otolaryngologists of UP and Lucknow to have conducted this mega event with panache.

With more than a 1000 members, NES of India is by far the biggest association of doctors working in the field of hearing, vertigo and balance, and this number is growing with each passing year. The 43rd annual NEScon is scheduled to be held in Kolkata in the year 2025.

It was after some years that I stepped in Safdarjung Hospital, the largest Central Govt. run hospital in India in terms of no. of beds.

Our hospitals might be overcrowded, they might have limited resources but what they lack in infrastructure is more than compensated by the dedication and kindness of the doctors and the support staff who are the backbone of these establishments.

I was invited at the Dept. of ENT to give a lecture on Positional Vertigo for the residents and junior doctors and was surprised with their natural curiosity and willingness to learn.

Most Vertigo stems from problems in the inner ear. It isn’t an exam favourite topic and one can train and be an excellent ENT surgeon without knowing too much about it. However the disease burden of vertigo is immense, with it being the second commonest symptom after pain.

The enthusiasm the residents displayed about learning more on positional vertigo was purely for the sake of knowledge, in order to provide better quality of healthcare to their patients. This wasn’t about exams, marks or distinctions.

Looking at the budding doctors in India, one rests assured that the health of our nation is in good hands.

Thank you Prof Isha Preet Tuli and head of department Prof Dr Nina Chaudhary for inviting me to your department, and the entire ENT department at the Vardhman Mahaveer Medical College and Safdarjung Hospital for your kind and overwhelming hospitality.

Not long ago the British Deputy High Commissioner to India, Ms Christina Scott CMG, invited select alumni from University College London to a reception at the High Commissioner's Residence. The agenda was to interact with UCL's senior leadership and reconnect with friends old and new. UCL this year, like every year, is amongst the top 10 universities in the world, and is entering an exciting chapter in its collaboration with the greatest of our research institutions (AIIMS & IIT for instance). Excitingly UCL has earmarked special scholarship program for prospective students in India. Arvind Vepa at india@ucl.ac.uk is the person to get in touch for more info on this.

Feels nice to be in constant touch with one's alma mater. :)

Dizziness is the second commonest medical symptom after pain. One of the disorders leading to dizziness/ vertigo is Meniere's Disease, first described more than 150 years ago, however diagnosing the disease beyond reasonable doubt is still a tough cookie to crack. In the last few years there have been discoveries that help in better identification of Meniere's Disorder. This results in proper patient care and medical management. Being one of the first centres in India to have adopted these skills/ tech and management strategies, Dr Ksh*tij Malik was invited to talk on this topic at the Annual Conference of Association of Otolaryngologists of India, Delhi Chapter at Lady Hardinge Medical College. Sharing a few snippets.

Kudos to the team, especially Dr Vipin Arora for an expertly planned and executed conference. Congratulations to Dr Ravi Meher for taking over as President of the society and Dr Manish Munjal for his role as Secretary.

This is an age of absolutes. Everybody is absolutely sure about everything. One such alleged absolute truth that is often floated around is that using earphones/ headphones is "absolutely" detrimental to one’s hearing. Parents know it, teachers know it and often enough medical professionals cement this.

While ww don’t have a vested interest in the argument, we know that people love listening to music on their earphones. Whether on a train, on a plane, the running track or an online meeting : earphones have their place. And by jove I know they aren’t the villains they are made to be.

If you are someone who feels guilty when using earphones, or one who might need more clarity whether you should gift a pair to a loved one :), here’s a video in the mother tongue with all the info that we think you might need.

Down syndrome is the most common chromosomal mutation that affects humans. While the physical and intellectual challenges are more prominent, the frequent Ear Related Concerns are often not discussed as much ; (because of certain anatomical changes, children with Down syndrome are at a high risk of developing problems with the Outer & the Middle Ear).

A couple of weeks ago a group of very dedicated parents of children with Down syndrome had invited Dr Ksh*tij Malik to share insights into the possible concerns, the investigations and management strategies of Ear Related Problems in such cases. The feedback received after the online session made us realise that this information can be of use to several other parents too.

Linked is the video of the session which addresses common concerns with hearing in children, specifically those with Down syndrome.

Children often develop ear pain and ear infections, which if untreated may result in bigger issues. These are more common in children with Down syndrome and ...

Happy to share that the book on complicated cases in Vertigo and Dizziness, edited by the legend Dr Kacker is finally out, including a chapter contributed by Dr Ksh*tij, Dr Tushar and Dr Richi.

The book contains several brilliant cases that highlight how the disease doesn't consult the text-book before it hits a patient. The symptoms patients come with can be varied, complex and may not fit the typical presentation highlighted in the books one has read during one's training.

Sharing such experiences with fellow doctors empowers them to be better.

Just the other day I met a couple at the clinic. The wife came with a problem, that her husband was going deaf. The Husband on the other hand was confident that his hearing was perfect, and had only come because, well, "She insisted". After evaluation it turned out that the wife was right. The husband was indeed losing his hearing. But why was this a surprise to him?

Why is that people are generally the first to figure out that they are losing their sight, but the last to figure out they are losing their hearing? What is so unusual about onset of hearing loss that makes it so difficult to pick up early? And is there an easy way to screen one's hearing at home?

Let's find out with this short post :).
