📚 Academic Research Committee Meeting | B.Optom Internship

The Academic Research Committee Meeting for the B.Optom Internship students was held today in the presence of Dr. Debarun Sharma, accompanied by the faculty members of the Academic Department. Dr. Sharma also officiates as the Member Secretary of the Institutional Ethics Committee (IEC) of Sri Sankaradeva Nethralaya,

📝 Five groups presented their Research Pre-Proposals, which were thoroughly reviewed by Dr. Sharma and the faculty panel, including the HoD In-charge, Mr. Kishor Kumar Choudhury. The session provided insightful guidance to refine their research approach and ensure ethical and academic rigor.

Sri Sankaradeva Nethralaya conducted a Basic Life Support (BLS) Training Program to enhance emergency response skills among staff. The session focused on lifesaving interventions such as high-quality CPR, AED use, and quick response during cardiac arrest and choking incidents.

The training was led by:
Dr. Sashibha Barman, Lead Instructor & TCF, Learnet Skills Ltd., and
Ms. Dipanjali Roy, AHA Certified Instructor, Apollo Hospitals Guwahati.

Participants received hands-on practice and skill assessment as per AHA guidelines, ensuring improved confidence and preparedness for real-life emergencies.

This initiative reinforces our commitment to patient safety, competency development, and quality care.

Our esteemed Speaker of the Month, Col. Ram Kishore, Regional Director, ECHS, captivated the Department of Optometry with his powerful knowledge-sharing and compelling personal stories from his service in the armed forces — each filled with pearls of wisdom to learn from.

We were also honoured by the gracious presence of our Hon’ble President, Dr. Harsha Bhattacharjee.

Sri Sankaradeva Nethralaya (SSDN), Guwahati, in collaboration with World Sight Foundation (WSF), UK, conducted a 3-day Ophthalmology Teaching Course for Primary Eye Care Practitioners between 20th and 22nd November 2025.
This Programme brought together an exceptional pool of ophthalmologists from the international arena as well as SSDN’s own in-house faculty (represented by Dr Damaris Magdalene, Senior Consultant at SSDN), to enhance skills of primary eye care practitioners in recognising, examining, and managing commonly encountered ocular conditions in both adults and children.

The faculty flew down to Guwahati from London, to train the primary eye care providers who had converged from various parts of the north-east to attend this programme.

From history-taking to hands-on clinical skilling, urgent referral cases, and a special session on diabetic retinopathy, the programme was crafted to empower practitioners with confidence, competence, and updated clinical insight. The event concluded successfully on 22nd November’25.

Our team along with the school authorities organized a free eye-screening camp and an awareness session on child eye health—because caring for their vision is caring for their future.
