Why People Act Differently Online: The Online Disinhibition Effect Explained
Have you ever heard someone say, “If you’re on social media, you need thick skin”? While that might sound true online, in real life, most of us wouldn’t easily accept constant criticism or rude behaviour from strangers. But on the internet, the rules often feel blurred.
Anonymity and the comfort of hiding behind a screen can make people say things they would never say face-to-face. This behaviour often crosses into cyberbullying and online harassment. Psychologist Dr. John Suler described this phenomenon nearly two decades ago as the “Online Disinhibition Effect”—and it’s still just as relevant today.
In my YouTube video, I break down this fascinating effect, explaining why people act differently online and how it impacts our mental health.
