Global Regulatory Developments in Crypto

The U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) has launched its second “Crypto Sprint” initiative, following recommendations from the White House to enhance oversight and consumer protection in digital assets. This includes seeking comments from various stakeholders, including public at large around
risk management, market resilience, and innovation pathways in the crypto ecosystem – a move that reflects the growing importance of structured regulatory frameworks worldwide.

South Korea is set to introduce a comprehensive won-backed stablecoin regulatory framework in October 2025, aiming to reduce its dependence on the US dollar and reinforce domestic financial sovereignty. This legislation will require stablecoin issuers to partner with major banking institutions such as KB Kookmin Bank and Shinhan Bank, ensuring that the stablecoins are fully backed by reserves held in regulated financial entities.

The proposed rules emphasize strong consumer protections, bankruptcy safeguards, and stringent operational controls, limiting issuance to entities with robust financial soundness and transparency. By establishing clear guidelines for collateral management, reserve audits, and transaction monitoring, South Korea aims to foster a secure and trustworthy digital asset environment.
