Ketoconazole with zinc pyrithione shampoo is a medicated anti-dandruff/antifungal shampoo mainly used for dandruff and seborrheic dermatitis of the scalp.
What it is
This shampoo combines ketoconazole (an antifungal that inhibits Malassezia yeast) and zinc pyrithione (antifungal and antibacterial) in one formulation.
Typical strengths are around ketoconazole 2% and zinc pyrithione 1%, used specifically for scalp conditions like dandruff and seborrheic dermatitis.
Main uses
Treats and controls dandruff by reducing flaking, itching, and scalp redness.
Helps manage seborrheic dermatitis and other Malassezia-related scalp fungal infections by disrupting fungal cell membranes and yeast growth.
How to use
Wet hair and scalp, apply shampoo mainly to scalp, massage gently, and leave for about 3–5 minutes before rinsing thoroughly.
Common regimens are 2 times per week for several weeks; for maintenance, it may be used less frequently as advised by a doctor or as per label.
Effectiveness
Both ketoconazole and zinc pyrithione individually are effective against dandruff-causing yeasts, and combining them aims to broaden antifungal/antimicrobial coverage.
In trials, ketoconazole 2% shampoo alone showed slightly higher improvement than zinc pyrithione 1% alone in severe dandruff, but both were beneficial and well tolerated.
Side effects and precautions
Common local side effects: scalp dryness, mild irritation, itching, burning, or redness; sometimes changes in hair texture or temporary hair shedding.
Rare but serious issues include allergic reactions or contact dermatitis (marked redness, swelling, rash, blistering); in such cases, stop use and seek medical advice.
