NAFLD

Now this is a real red alert. Of all the disturbing news in the newspaper, this one grabbed my attention today.

All this while, we were focussing on Childhood obesity and the consequent metabolic complications. Yes, it is time now to assess deeper into liver health, and not to oversee it on account of age!

Alert parents, do not expose kids to the attractive junk, sodas and processed foods. Nothing beats home made snacks, be it patties, pizzas, vadas, crispy corns, colorful fruits, bhel, channa chaat, and many more!

Happy 25 to my healthcare journey!

The journey started on May 2nd 1998 at Apollo Hospitals as a trainee dietitian and made me grow as Chief Nutritionist, mentored by great teachers and stalwarts.

Thanking Almighty for this beautiful journey which gave me great platforms both to share and update my knowledge. It has today given me wings to leave an independent mark as a Registered Dietitian, touching many lives and doing my best for each and every client.

Thanks to my mentor Dr. Bhuvaneshwari Shankar, my guide and well wisher Shobha mam, my team, colleagues and friends.

Above all, thanks to God for blessing me with a family that understands the load of multitasking and always stands by me in all my endeavors. Thank you Shravan, Sashank and Sameeksha!

More to go, as the journey goes on!

Amla, commonly called as Nellikkai in Tamil and Usirikaya in Telugu.. a grand provider of vitamin C and so easily available these days, When you buy fruits, apart from the big ones like mangoes, pineapples, apples and papayas, don't forget to pick these cute little ones.. loaded with wonderful nutrients such as iron, Vitamin C, calcium and fiber.
I started using this when my children were of toddlers age, used to give some amla juice with honey to prevent cold and coughs and it did help. Amla is excellent in antioxidants, works wonders for hair growth( we often see it in shampoos and hair oils as well) when taken regularly, Prevents mouth ulcers, helps in battling anemia, constipation and also boosts metabolism!
So how can we use this wonderfruit? Make a juice or add it to the usual mosambi or lime juice, can be sundried with some home made spices, jams and powders can be made too!
And we get a whole lot of recipes on the net. Choose ones that preserve the freshness, so we do not lose on the nutrients.
I prefer cutting it into pieces and just chewing it up slowly, fresh. Initial sour taste fades away in a few minutes and then I start enjoying it. Worth trying!
So next time you buy fruits, don't forget to bring in this little angel fruit that does wonders to your health!

CORONA Alerts all over the country, safety measures up, hygiene precautions up, lots of news in social media, some perfect, some hyped!
As a Nutritionist, I can only convey to the public that it is your own immunity levels and your hygiene practices that can help handle this threat we are facing! Now, boosting immunity is not an overnight task, everything takes its time.. but better late than never!
We Indians have already made a practice of using various foods which are loaded with immune-boosters such as amla, oranges, dark grapes, our bright veggies like carrots, tomatoes, spinach. Most of us feel incomplete without the thayir saadam, which is very important in maintaining our gut flora!
Added to this, we Indians are well known for using various combinations with ginger, cinnamon, turmeric, cardamom, garlic.. and so on , each of which have their own healing properties. We also use nuts like almonds and walnuts in many occasions.
Not to say that we are going to fight the crisis by consuming these foods only, but a word of alertness to all parents with small children.. take time and effort to make your child eat all these nutritious foods. Today's children are tomorrow's adults, and people with good nutrition and immunity levels fare better when infected, because their defense mechanisms are strong.
And no castles were built in a day!
Replace junk and refined foods with fresh fruits, nuts, dairy and home-made snacks.Make sure they meet their protein needs as well, as it is important for muscle growth, repair and immunity.Help them lose weight if they are overweight/ obese.
Take the task in your hands! This virus threat is a reminder to rise up their nutrition for better health!!

Hi Friends,

Do you know what is SAW? Got some news here for you, 9-15 March 2020 is Salt Awareness Week!

We Indians take a lot of salt, not only in our daily food at home, but majorly from processed foods and preserved stuff! Infact, we even find children's intake of salt on the higher side, again through junk and processed foods.

With rising numbers of hypertensives and incidents of cardiac issues, strokes, etc. it becomes very important to keep salt intake to the minimum!

Let's give this nutrient its due place in our diet, and not overdo! With the world focussing more on weight loss and diabetes management, the salt intake is often overlooked.

This SAW,make it a point to watch your salt intake and march this March with Mindful eating!!

# SAW # salt # say no to junk # less salt # less load # mindful march # stay healthy
