When Roles are Reversed: A Special World Obesity Day Reflection 💐
In the quiet routine of the surgical ward, there are moments that deeply touch the heart of a surgeon. Typically, it is the family who brings flowers to a patient recovering from surgery. However, this morning, the roles were beautifully reversed.
I was moved to receive a stunning bouquet—not from a visitor, but from a patient I had the privilege of operating on just three days ago.
As she prepares for her discharge today, a mere 72 hours after her Laparoscopic Bariatric Surgery, it is not just her clinical recovery that is remarkable—it is the visible transformation in her spirit. Today also marks World Obesity Day, and seeing her walk toward a completely different life is the most powerful way to observe it.
After years of enduring the physical and emotional weight of obesity and its related health struggles, she isn’t simply leaving the hospital; she is reclaimed. What struck me most was the renewed spark in her eyes—a reflection of the hope and excitement that comes when a burden is finally lifted.
Seeing that joy is the ultimate reward. It serves as a powerful reminder that our work at ODDS Clinic and AIG Hospitals goes far beyond the operating room. We don’t just “operate”—we provide the tools for a patient to hit the “reset button” on their metabolic health.
On this World Obesity Day, let’s shift the perspective from judgment to support, and from struggle to science-backed solutions. Wishing her a magnificent journey ahead as she walks toward a lighter, healthier, and much happier version of herself! ✨
