What is Echogenic Intracardiac Focus (EIF)?
Spotted a bright spot in your baby’s heart during an ultrasound? It’s called Echogenic Intracardiac Focus (EIF) – a minor and usually harmless finding.
✅ It’s not a heart defect
✅ Doesn’t affect heart function
✅ Seen in 3–5% of normal pregnancies
🔍 We report it only because it can be a soft marker for chromosomal conditions like Down syndrome.
👉 If other tests are normal, EIF alone is not a concern and usually disappears by 26–38 weeks.
