A lip tie can cause different sets of issues in different age groups.

At 0-6 months,if the child has breastfeeding difficulty, difficulty in flanging the upper lip to form a seal,restricts full movement of the upper lip,resulting in long,tiresome and painful feeds for exhausted mother's. Bottle feeding too is difficult as it's nearly impossible to hold on to the Bottle. Gas issues and reflux are common as air ingestion is very high.Babies are treated for reflux for months together,at times.

After 6 months of age,as the upper teeth erupt,the restricted movement of the lip can cause food and milk to remain trapped as the lip tie fibres can extend in between teeth,and the area is inaccessible with a toothbrush. This causes early tooth decay.
This is TRUE for breastmilk,formula as well as solid food.

As the child grows older and milk teeth are replaced by permanent teeth,the gap/ diastema does not close at times.

The reason for release may differ as per the age.

In our office,a lip tie release is a simple procedure done with a laser under Oral sedation and a few drops of anesthetic for few days old babies to toddlers ,children and adults as well.

Active stretches will help the wound settle in 7-10 days.
