As a pediatrician we see so many rare diseases and collectively they are not so rare. For parents, it means foray into an unknown territory and most of the times huge expenses and running from pillar to post to sometimes find a cure which may not even exist..

Tips for healthy sleep for your child:

1. Have a set bedtime and bedtime routine for your child.
2. Bedtime and wake-up time should be about the same time on school nights and non–school nights. There should not be more than about 1 hr difference from one day to another.
3. Make the hour before bed shared quiet time. Avoid high-energy activities, such as rough play, and stimulating activities, such as watching television or playing computer games, just before bed.
4. Don 't send your child to bed hungry. A light snack (e.g., milk and cookies) before bed is a good idea. Heavy meals within 1 hr or 2 of bedtime, however, may interfere with sleep.
5. Avoid products containing caffeine for at least several hours before bedtime. These include caffeinated sodas, coffee, tea, and chocolate.
6. Make sure your child spends time outside every day, whenever possible, and is involved in regular exercise.
7. Keep your child 's bedroom quiet and dark. A low-level night light is acceptable for children who find completely dark rooms frightening.

A Sunday well spent! Organized an Advanced NRP course at Institute of Child Health yesterday with Dr. Amrita ray, Kheya Ghosh Uttam , Jagadish Sahoo , Dr Rakesh Dey and Dr Soutrik SeTh, where we trained paediatricians in advanced neonatal resuscitation. An afternoon of teaching, learning, practicing skills!

We are celebrating . We all understand how important breast milk is for a growing baby, not just for nutrition, but also for protection against infections. Breastmilk is all the more important for a premature baby whose immature gut cannot handle formula milk well and unfortunately some babies who dont get human milk can develop necrotizing enterocolitis, a fatal condition.
Now these twin babies who came out 3 months early weighing barely 1 kg needed milk. And i called this kind lady whose children i see regularly. Now she drove on this hot Sunday morning to collect milk from her friend who kindly donated and she delivered them to the hospital, for these babies not related to them at all. Such selfless acts of kindness is what makes the world a better place!
