Case Study 1
“My childhood was distinctly different than the ones children lead now. The rush that surged over me as the school bell rang was something which is missing. The eagerness of getting lost in the green meadows is replaced by cell-phones. I remember hurriedly finishing my lunch and rushing down to my friends. The afternoon passed away gleefully while playing hide and seek, cycling and various other open-air games.” This was recalled by Sahiunnessa Bibi of Dakshin Raipur, Budge Budge as she told us about her childhood.
When asked about her days before she began school she said “My mom usually was kept busy by various house-hold chores. She made us sit inside an enclosed space on the ground. She made a fence surrounding the place by planting some sticks in the ground. We were given some toys to keep ourselves busy and engaged. After a while, we would fall asleep on the hard ground, being covered in the dust which never bothered us. During the evenings she took us for a walk and that’s the time we spent together.”
I try spending time with my kid. Although I try not to encourage him in using the cell-phone but now every child has access to it. I have tried to play with him and teach him certain thing along with my other activities. Even before joining the sessions I tried doing so, but I have indeed learnt a lot from there. My kid, who is now 2 years 4 months old has learnt to identify various things especially colors and vegetables. He enjoys going there and we treat it as it is a school. Within the fun-filled songs, rhymes and dancing he has learnt a bit of studies too. I have myself learnt a lot. I’ve learnt how to keep my child busy and play with him. I now can make various innovative toys at home after learning it from the sessions. I have made a car out of a medicine box! Along with all the activities it would be great if you could add some food and treat it like a school. It would be even better if it was twice a week. I love attending the classes with my child and never missed a single one. I cancel my other plans just to attend the sessions. Maybe a dress could be provided so it makes even more like “going to school”. I have bought rhyme books, picture books and color pencils, but I haven’t bought any story books till date. Over all I like attending the meets with my child.

When our community rehabilitation worker from Purulia shares videos like this our hearts get filled up with joy and we get extra motivation to continue our services.. this little one couldn't walk on her own just six months back, but see, now she is taking steps forward and enjoying..
Jayasri Banerjee shared this with our team today!

It's been long since our last post.. Udbhaas is relentlessly continuing service in Purulia, serving underprivileged special need children in remote areas.
Our field workers are beating the scorching sun and their regular visits are helping our children in Purulia in many ways.
A little shy boy Atul ( name changed) , didn't use to even come near our therapists or community workers, responding to various stimulations was far for him, he also didn't mingle much with peers. He is now playing with his peers, his peers are motivated by our worker Sipra, and in turn they are motivating him to play with them.. Atul is learning, responding and gradually entering mainstream.
Bibek, another community worker from our team UDBHAAS, shared a video few days back, a child who couldn't turn around can now sit up all by himself. Regular home visits and therapy , which Bibek dedicatedly gives has enabled this child to achieve to this.
There are many more stories to share. We will keep posting more.
But before we end this post today we would like to thank our field manager Saurabh Dasgupta who meticulously co- ordinates our community rehabilitation team and keeps track of every child.
Sharing some moments of a field visit of our Project Co- ordinator, Swati Basu and field manager Saurabh Dasgupta ..
