Understanding the Fog: A Guide to Depersonalization-Derealization (DPDR)
By Dr. Reshmi Sensarma Basu, Senior Counselling Psychologist
Have you ever felt like you’re watching your life happen from behind a thick pane of glass? Or perhaps you’ve looked in the mirror and felt as though the person looking back isn't quite "you"?
These experiences are often categorized under Depersonalization-Derealization Disorder (DPDR). While these sensations can be deeply unsettling, understanding the psychology behind them is the first step toward regaining your sense of presence.
What is DPDR?
DPDR is essentially a protective mechanism of the mind. It often occurs when the brain is overwhelmed by anxiety, trauma, or prolonged stress. To protect you from emotional pain, the mind "unplugs" or creates a distance from reality.
* Depersonalization: Feeling detached from your body, thoughts, or feelings. You might feel like an outside observer of your own life.
* Derealization: Feeling that the world around you is "fake," "foggy," or dream-like. Objects may appear distorted in size or clarity.
Why Does It Happen?
In the field of psychology, we view DPDR as a dissociative defense. When the nervous system enters a state of "freeze," it dampens our sensory input. It is not a sign of "going crazy"; rather, it is a sign that your system is exhausted and trying to shield itself.
Steps Toward Grounding
If you or someone you love is experiencing this "fog," here are three ways to begin reconnecting:
* Acknowledge the Safety: Remind yourself: "I am safe. This is my brain's way of trying to protect me, even if it feels uncomfortable."
* Sensory Grounding: Use the 5-4-3-2-1 technique. Identify 5 things you see, 4 you can touch, 3 you hear, 2 you smell, and 1 you can taste. This pulls the brain back to the present moment.
* Physical Movement: Gentle stretching or walking barefoot on the floor can help "re-anchor" your consciousness within your physical body.
Healing is a journey of patience and professional support. You do not have to navigate the fog alone.
