The patient had advanced thyroid cancer (stage IV) that was no longer responding to chemotherapy or immunotherapy. The tumour had grown to obstruct her trachea, leaving her in severe respiratory distress. She had been unable to lie down or sleep for nearly two weeks. A tracheostomy was not possible.
We decided to give palliative radiation.
Gradually, the tumour shrank. For the first time in many days, she could breathe without oxygen support. More than anything, she was overjoyed that she could finally lie down and sleep. This moment was captured then.
We lost her a few days ago.
As an oncologist, moments like these are painful. But at the same time, I feel privileged to have been by her side—holding her hand and trying to give her some relief.
In moments like these, I find the purpose of my life.
