Just returned from an amazing three-day conference with the Gastrointestinal Oncology Society (GIOS) in Kochi, where the entire focus was on colorectal cancers! It was so exciting to spend three days diving deep into a single cancer type with doctors from all different specialties. I also loved catching up with many old friends from different medical fields. A special shout-out to Dr. Pavithran of Amrita, it was great to see you!
I was so proud to be on the stage for the inaugural function of GIOS with some true legends: Dr. Philip Augustine, Dr. Prasanth Mathur of ICMR, and Dr. Madhu, President of the Association of Radiation Oncologists of India.
I chaired a session on the topic of treating advanced-stage colorectal cancers that have spread to the liver. We had a great discussion about all the different options, from surgery and SBRT (radiation) to intrahepatic arterial chemotherapy and, most importantly, the incredible progress we're making with immunotherapy. The biggest takeaway for me was the rapid advances in using immunotherapy for patients with specific tumor with mutations like MSI and POLE. The idea that we can now potentially offer some patients a chance to avoid chemo, radiation, or even surgery is truly a game-changer.
A huge congratulations to Dr. Arun Warrier and Dr.Arunlal for organizing this wonderful and insightful conference. So proud to be part of a society that is pushing the boundaries of what's possible in cancer care!
