After being persuaded by Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru to create an Indian cosmetics brand to reduce dependence on foreign products, JRD Tata tasked a team from Tata Group to find a name that would resonate with both Indian and international audiences. The team traveled to Paris, where they were inspired by the French opera "Lakmé," itself named after the French rendition of the Hindu goddess Lakshmi, symbolizing beauty and prosperity.
