Christian Medical College & Hospital The Medical Missionary work was started in Ludhiana in the year 1881 by the Greenfield sisters, Miss Martha Rose and Miss Kay Greenfield.

According to the Constitution of the Christian Medical College Ludhiana Society (Regd.), the Christian Medical College Ludhiana is an educational and research institution of an all India character established and run by the minority Christian community. Its primary aim is to educate and train Christian men and women as health professionals, in the spirit of Jesus Christ for the healing ministry of the Church in India. However, like man other Christian educational institutions this college also offers educational facilities to other young men and women irrespective of religion, caste and community. Through education in this college the Christian Church seeks to make a significant contribution to the health standards of all communities of our nation with special emphasis on health care in the rural underserved and unreached areas/communities in India. They were Evangelists and Educationalists from Scotland. This pioneering medical work of the Greenfield sisters was the precursor of the Medical Training and Health Care Service Programe of the present Christian Medical College, Ludhiana

The Greenfield sisters and their associates organized the Health Care Educational Services in which endeavour Dr. Edith Mary Brown joined them in 1893 and in 1894 the North Indian School of Medicine for Christian Women was started by Dr. Edith Mary Brown and her colleagues with the object of training Indian nationals particularly the women, to serve in the field of Medical education and Health Care Services, emphasizing integration of training and health care services. The period from 1894 to 1952 has been an epoch making era which saw the landmark of development from its beginning as a School of Medicine for Christian Women to Women’s Christian Medical College until 1952 when the name was changed to Christian Medical College to enable it to admit both men and women students for the upgraded MBBS course which came into effect for its first admission from 1953. The College was affiliated with Punjab University, Chandigarh. The Medical School granted LSMF diploma till 1952. Since the College was upgraded to M.B.B.S in 1953, more than 2000 candidates have graduated and these graduates are serving in different parts of India & the world. The Christian Medical College is situated in a large campus not far from Ludhiana Railway Station, on both sides of the Brown Road. The Campus has residential quarters for the staff, hostels for medical, nursing and paramedical students, both men and women. The College maintains 775 Hospital beds. Our national medical and para-medical teaching staff and other staff come from nearly every state in India. The Government of India and Punjab have continued their interest and support in the work and the development of the college and its hospital.

Global Hand Washing Day Observed at Christian Medical College & Hospital, Ludhiana

Ludhiana, 15th October 2025 – Christian Medical College & Hospital, Ludhiana, celebrated Global Hand Washing Day with the theme “Be a Handwashing Hero” to promote awareness about proper hand hygiene.

On this occasion, several activities were organized as part of a new initiative to engage not only healthcare professionals but also patients and their relatives. Demonstrations of proper hand washing steps were conducted in both IPD and OPD areas, ensuring everyone understood its importance in preventing infections. Ward In-Charges and nurses actively participated, taking a pledge to continue and improve hand hygiene practices in their respective areas.

The Infection Prevention & Control (IPC) team, along with the Nursing Department, led the awareness drive, emphasizing the crucial role of hand hygiene in patient safety and infection control. The initiative aimed to encourage all staff and patients to make hand hygiene a daily routine.

An insightful session was held on 12th October, 2025, at CMC & Hospital, Ludhiana on "Patient Safety – Building a Safer Health Care System", featuring an expert talk by Dr Deepak Singla as the Chief Speaker, Alumnus of CMC Ludhiana.
We are grateful for the meaningful contributions by Mr. Mahendra Singh, Dr Anita Sharma, and Mrs. Sangeeta Nichols, who shared valuable perspectives on fostering a culture of safety, accountability, and continuous improvement in healthcare.

The 41st LH Lobo Memorial Oration was hosted by The Department of Paediatrics, CMC & Hospital, Ludhiana on the 11th of October 2025. Dr Piyush Gupta, an eminent Paediatrician, was the Chief Orator and he delivered the oration on ‘My tryst with the sunlight vitamin’. Nearly 250 delegates including Undergraduate students, Post Graduate students, Paediatricians from Punjab and faulty of all colleges of CMC Ludhiana attended the Oration.
Dr William Bhatti, Director, CMCL welcomed the gathering and congratulated the department for organising the event. Mr Maninderjit Singh, President of the Lobo Trust, spoke about the history of the oration. He was followed by Dr NK Choudhary, Secretary of the LB Lobo trust who gave an insight about the life of Dr Lobo.
The oration was followed by a felicitation ceremony of earlier HODs of the Department to mark the 60 years of Paediatric Education at CMC & Hospital, Ludhiana. Dr Manorama Verma, Dr Daljit Singh, Dr Jugesh Chhatwal, Dr Gurmeet Kaur and Dr Inderpreet Sohi were the ex-HODs who were felicitated.
The oration ceremony was followed by a CME on ‘’Paediatric Perspectives- Bridging Advances and Practice’’ on common topics such as Non-communicable diseases, urinary tract infections, intensive care, tropical fevers and a discussion on available vaccines. The speakers were Dr Jugesh Chhatwal, Dr Inderpreet Sohi, Dr Mehak Bansal and Dr Ankit Mangla.
Dr Monika Sharma, Professor and Head- Department of Paediatrics, the organising chairperson of the event, highlighted the importance of the events and thanked her predecessors for setting up one of the oldest Department of Paediatric in Punjab.

World Mental Health Day is observed every year on 10th October to raise awareness about mental well-being and promote positive mental health across all spheres of life.

On this occasion, Dr Mamta Singla,Professor & HOD,Department of Psychiatry , CMC, was invited by Tata Steel, Ludhiana, to conduct an awareness lecture on the theme “Mental Health Matters Everywhere – From Home to Workplace.”

The session was delivered by Dr. Mamta Singla, Professor & Head, Department of Psychiatry, CMC, along with Ms. Ashima Jain, Physician Assistant, Department of Psychiatry.

Dr. Mamta Singla highlighted the importance of emotional well-being, the connection between mental health and productivity at the workplace, and shared practical strategies for maintaining work-life balance and resilience.

The lecture was attended by Tata Steel Ludhiana officers, including Chief Ludhiana Project – Mr. David William, and from the HR team – Mr. Kanu Agrawal (Head HR), Mr. Arun Kumar Kabi, and Ms. Anupa Elizabeth, along with Head Officers Engineers from different streams(Mechanical, Electrical,Civil) and several staff members.

The session concluded with an interactive discussion and a collective message emphasizing that mental health is as vital as physical health, and fostering awareness, acceptance, and support can help create a healthier and more compassionate workplace.

WORLD MENTAL HEALTH DAY 2025

THEME: “ACCESS TO SERVICES: MENTAL HEALTH IN CATASTROPHES & EMERGENCIES”

The Department of Psychiatry, Christian Medical College & Hospital, Ludhiana, in collaboration with the Department of Mental Health Nursing, College of Nursing, celebrated World Mental Health Day 202&. The theme for this year’s celebration was “Access to Services: Mental Health in Catastrophes and Emergencies.”
The event began with an invocation song by the nursing & medical students, followed by a prayer led by Rev. Nitin S. Cherian the Fellowship Department. Dr. Neeta Austin Singha, Head of the Department of Mental Health Nursing, extended a warm welcome to the dignitaries and introduced the Chief Guest, Dr. William Bhatti, Director of CMC & Hospital, Ludhiana. In his address, Dr. William Bhatti, emphasized the importance of ensuring mental health support systems during times of crisis and appreciated the joint efforts of the psychiatry and College of Nursing departments in spreading the awareness regarding importance of Mental Health.
Dr. Harjit, Principal of the College of Nursing, addressed the audience and spoke about the significance of developing resilience and accessibility in mental health care delivery. Dr. Mamta Singla, Head of Psychiatry Department, CMC & Hospital, unfolded the theme and highlighted the vital role of student nurses in maintaining continuity of care during disasters and emergencies.
As part of the celebration, several competitions were organized to encourage student participation and creativity:
Oratory Contest: First prize was awarded to Ms. Stuti Victoria, B.Sc. Nursing 8th Semester.
Poster Competition:
First Prize – Binisha Abraham – B.Sc.(N) 6th Semester
Second Prize – Jia S. Nair – B.Sc.(N) 6th Semester
Third Prize – Anna Maria Pingua – B.Sc.(N) 6th Semester
Video-Making Competition: Results were also declared, showcasing the students’ innovative perspectives on the theme.

The celebration reinforced the message that mental health care is a universal right and highlighted the ongoing commitment of CMC & Hospital to promoting awareness, compassion, and accessibility in mental health services, especially in times of catastrophe and emergency.

Flood Relief Medical Camps Organised by CMC Ludhiana and Nanaksar Thath Isher Darbar

CMC Ludhiana and Nanaksar Thath Isher Darbar (NTID, Barundi), successfully organised three Flood Relief Medical Camps last week at Sasrali, Mangli Tanda and Sahabana Villages in Ludhiana. This week also the Department of Ophthalmology, CMC Ludhiana, in collaboration with NTID (Barundi), organised three Flood Relief Medical Camps at Raur village (30th Sept 2025), Boothgarh Sasrali village (1st Oct 2025) and Kasabad village, near Bahadur ke Road (3rd Oct,2025) extending free consultations and essential medications to residents affected by the recent floods.
More than 800 patients were examined by a team of Ophthalmologists, Physicians and Nursing Staff. The medical problems ranged from stomach problems, along with skin diseases, fever and body-aches, respiratory conditions to eye infections and allergies. Appropriate medicines were provided free of cost. A total of 410 refractions were done and free spectacles were also provided. Nanaksar Thath Isher Darbar has supported a total of 35 free cataract surgeries in these camps. Additionally, patients identified for further management were referred to the Base Hospital. The team of doctors included Dr Nitin Batra (Ophthalmology), Dr Deepshikha Kamra (Community Medicine), Dr Vinay Wilson (RHOP) and others.
Dr. William Bhatti, Director CMC lauded the timely efforts of the Eye Department in reaching out to the residents of various villages in Ludhiana, during their time of distress. He conveyed his gratitude to the Nanaksar Thath Isher Darbar for embracing this noble cause and guaranteeing that patients attending the camps were directly benefitted through quality medical care.

On 30th September 2025, the Nursing Department of Christian Medical College and Hospital, Ludhiana organized a Continuing Nursing Education (CNE) program on “Nursing Excellence in Quality and Patient Safety” with the sub-theme “From Standards to Practice: Enhancing Patient Safety through Nursing Excellence” at the Hospital Auditorium.
Nursing Superintendent Ms. Sangeeta Nichols highlighted that the CNE aimed to strengthen nurses’ skills, provide practical insights, and inspire safe, high-quality care. The program began with a welcome address by Deputy Nursing Superintendent Sis. Mizrab Chaudhary, a floral welcome to dignitaries, and a vote of thanks by Assistant Nursing Superintendent Sis. Anupama, followed by a group photo of participants.
Director Dr. William Bhatti, Chief Guest, emphasized that patient safety is central to quality care and lauded nursing’s role in implementing safe practices. Medical Superintendent Dr. Allen Joseph, Guest of Honour, highlighted teamwork and continuous education as key to fostering a culture of safety.
The event was attended by 150 nurses, supervisors, and in-charges. Certificates of recognition were awarded to 36 nurses who participated in the Patient Safety Quiz on 26th September 2025.
The scientific sessions featured expert speakers—Dr. Reena Jairus, Dr. Joseph John, Dr. Gurbhej Singh, Dr. Sameer, Ms. Meghala, and Ms. Kamla Jose—who emphasized that patient safety requires evidence-based practices, interdisciplinary collaboration, effective reporting, continuous competency assessment, and strong nursing leadership.

CMC LUDHIANA SHINES AT AIOS MT CONFERENCE 2025!

The Department of Ophthalmology CMC Ludhiana presented a record 14 Free Papers and E posters at the All India Ophthalmological Society Mid Term Conference held in Amritsar from 26th to 28th September 2025. This included 7 short term student projects from the MBBS Batch of 2022, including Mr. Ansh Sachdeva (Awareness of DR in Eye OPD patients), Mr. Prakhar Arora (Refractive errors in UG students of CMC), Mr. Ujjwal Thakran (Dry eye disease post cataract), Mr. Anson Simon (School teachers training program for detecting ocular conditions) and Mr. Advik Sharma (Awareness on Eye Donation). Mr Ishaan Immanuel’s study on blind school surveys and Mr Yashmit Dhingra’s posterior segment findings in ophthalmology project received special appreciation for being ‘original and unique’ research projects.

Dr. Laksh*t Pasricha (PG Resident) was awarded the best Free Paper in Session 3 for his study on USG findings in ocular pathologies. Dr Pankaj Sharma (PG Resident) presented a study comparing 2 anti-allergic Eye Drops with special emphasis on Quality of Life. Dr. John Jacob Mathew (PG Resident) was awarded the best E - Poster for his study on OCT. The other PG presentations were by Dr. Simran Chawla (QOL in glaucoma patients), Dr. Rajat Solomon (Corneal changes in PEX Syndrome), Dr. Nischay Shajan (RNLF thickness in Diabetics) and Dr. Priya Goyal (KAP in Glaucoma patients).

Dr. Nitin Batra and Dr. Rupali Chopra chaired 2 sessions each. Dr. Reenu Thomas and Dr. Samson Rajpal were acknowledged for supervising various student research projects.
