Christian Medical College & Hospital The Medical Missionary work was started in Ludhiana in the year 1881 by the Greenfield sisters, Miss Martha Rose and Miss Kay Greenfield.

According to the Constitution of the Christian Medical College Ludhiana Society (Regd.), the Christian Medical College Ludhiana is an educational and research institution of an all India character established and run by the minority Christian community. Its primary aim is to educate and train Christian men and women as health professionals, in the spirit of Jesus Christ for the healing ministry of the Church in India. However, like man other Christian educational institutions this college also offers educational facilities to other young men and women irrespective of religion, caste and community. Through education in this college the Christian Church seeks to make a significant contribution to the health standards of all communities of our nation with special emphasis on health care in the rural underserved and unreached areas/communities in India. They were Evangelists and Educationalists from Scotland. This pioneering medical work of the Greenfield sisters was the precursor of the Medical Training and Health Care Service Programe of the present Christian Medical College, Ludhiana

The Greenfield sisters and their associates organized the Health Care Educational Services in which endeavour Dr. Edith Mary Brown joined them in 1893 and in 1894 the North Indian School of Medicine for Christian Women was started by Dr. Edith Mary Brown and her colleagues with the object of training Indian nationals particularly the women, to serve in the field of Medical education and Health Care Services, emphasizing integration of training and health care services. The period from 1894 to 1952 has been an epoch making era which saw the landmark of development from its beginning as a School of Medicine for Christian Women to Women’s Christian Medical College until 1952 when the name was changed to Christian Medical College to enable it to admit both men and women students for the upgraded MBBS course which came into effect for its first admission from 1953. The College was affiliated with Punjab University, Chandigarh. The Medical School granted LSMF diploma till 1952. Since the College was upgraded to M.B.B.S in 1953, more than 2000 candidates have graduated and these graduates are serving in different parts of India & the world. The Christian Medical College is situated in a large campus not far from Ludhiana Railway Station, on both sides of the Brown Road. The Campus has residential quarters for the staff, hostels for medical, nursing and paramedical students, both men and women. The College maintains 775 Hospital beds. Our national medical and para-medical teaching staff and other staff come from nearly every state in India. The Government of India and Punjab have continued their interest and support in the work and the development of the college and its hospital.

NMC Convocation in CMC: 50 doctors awarded
6th Convocation of National Medical Commission (NMC) was Organized by the NMC Nodal Centre, Christian Medical College, Ludhiana. Prof. (Dr.) Rajeev Sharma, Controller of Examination, Baba Farid University of Health Sciences, Faridkot was the Chief Guest and awarded Advance course in Medical Education (ACME) certificates to 50 doctors from various medical colleges from Jammu & Kashmir, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana and Punjab. Dr. Sharma informed the gathering that examinations reforms has happened as many doctors are now trained in advanced courses on assessment in medical courses. Dr William Bhatti, Director CMC Ludhiana introduced the Chief Guest. Dr Jeyaraj Pandian, Principal CMC Ludhiana extended warm welcome all the delegates. Dr Dinesh Badyal, Vice Principal (Medical Education) & Convener NMC Nodal centre informed that ACME course is of 6 months duration and 2 batches are enrolled in each year. Dr. Anjali Jain, Co-convener NMC Nodal centre & Incharge ACME course informed that along with Convocation, a CME workshop is being held to train all the awarded doctors in the topic Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE ) in Competency based medical education and Digital OSCEs. Digital platform was provided to all doctors who acted as examiners for the OSCE setup in hand on workshops and doctors marked students on the checklist on their phones/ipads/tabs. Resource faculty included Dr. Badyal, Dr. Anjali Jain, Dr. Pamela Jeyaraj, Dr. Christina George and Dr. Ajay Kumar. Ten dental students were awarded for securing distinction in pharmacology.

SSI Awareness Session Conducted for Nursing Staff – 28th November 2025
To reinforce infection prevention practices and enhance patient safety in the surgical areas, the Hospital Infection Control (HIC) Team conducted a comprehensive Surgical Site Infection (SSI) Awareness Session for all nursing staff on 28th November 2025.

The initiative was led by the Nursing Superintendent, who emphasized that preventing SSI is an individual responsibility of every healthcare professional, and strong adherence to infection control practices is essential to ensure quality surgical outcomes.

The session was conducted by Dr. Manharpreet, Head of Department, Hospital Infection Control, who delivered an in-depth orientation on critical elements of SSI prevention. The key topics covered included: Introduction to Surgical Site Infections (SSI), Pre-operative, intra-operative, and post-operative precautions, Calculation of SSI rates and Documentation, surveillance, and reporting of SSI cases

The session was formally concluded by Ms. Meghala Ramsay, Administrator, Clinical and Quality Services, who appreciated the active participation of the nursing staff and reiterated the importance of continuous learning for improved patient outcomes.

These sessions will continue in the coming weeks to further strengthen the nurses’ knowledge and skills related to infection prevention, patient safety, and quality improvement.

Eye Donation Awareness Campaign by CMC Ludhiana

Christian Medical College (CMC) Ludhiana conducted an Eye Donation Awareness Programme as part of the statewide Organ Donation Campaign of the Directorate of Medical Education & Research, Punjab, and the State Organ and Tissue Transplant Organization (SOTTO), Punjab, held in respectful commemoration of the 350th year of the martyrdom of Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji.
The programme aimed to enhance public understanding of the importance of eye donation, a critical procedure that offers the gift of sight to individuals suffering from blindness. Faculty from the Department of Ophthalmology provided scientific and ethical insights into corneal retrieval and transplantation, and addressed common misconceptions that often deter potential donors.
Dr. Nitin Batra, Head of Ophthalmology at CMC Ludhiana, emphasized that increased donor awareness is essential to address the significant demand for corneal tissue. Presentations were done by Dr. Athira Saji, Dr Raron and Dr. Japjeet Kaur who busted the myths and misconceptions of eye donation.
The event included awareness talks, interactive discussions, donor pledge registration, and dissemination of educational materials among 120 nursing students and over 50 staff nurses and community leaders.
CMC Ludhiana reaffirmed its commitment to supporting state-led health initiatives and promoting ethical organ and tissue donation for the welfare of society.

*CMC Ludhiana Marks World COPD Day; Dedicates New Pulmonary Function Test Machine*

The *Department of Respiratory Medicine* at Christian Medical College & Hospital, Ludhiana, observed *World COPD Day on 19–20 November 2025* aligned with this year's theme, *"Short of breath, Think COPD"*. A series of awareness and service-oriented activities were conducted.

On *19 November* , the department conducted an educational program focusing on *Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)* and smoking cessation.
- *Dr. Navjot Singh* , Head of the Department of General Medicine, spoke on the impact of smoking and pollution in the development of COPD.
- *Dr. Febi Ann Roy* , Assistant Professor, Department of Respiratory Medicine, addressed key aspects of COPD including symptoms, treatment options, the correct inhaler techniques and it's importance, and smoking cessation strategies.

As part of the service and awareness drive, the department offered *free Pulmonary Function Test (PFT)* screening, with *39 patients* undergoing testing and receiving appropriate medications.

On *20 November* , the newly installed *Pulmonary Function Test (PFT) machine* - a state-of-the-art breathing test machine meeting the American Thoracic Society and European Respiratory Society standards, was formally inaugurated by *Dr. Jeyaraj D. Pandian**, Principal , Christian Medical College and *Dr. Allen Joseph*, Medical Superintendent, CMC Hospital.

The machine is expected to enhance diagnostic capabilities and improve respiratory care services at the institution.

🌟 CMC Ludhiana Hosts the 5th Professor Forest Eggleston Oration 🌟
The Department of Neurology, Christian Medical College Ludhiana in collaboration with the F.C Eggleston Trust hosted the 5th Professor F.C. Eggleston Oration - a tribute to one of North India’s greatest surgical educators, Professor Forest Cary Eggleston.
This year’s oration was delivered by Professor Dr Michael D. Hill, a leading neurologist from the University of Calgary, Canada, President of the Canadian Neurological Association and a globally recognized leader in the field of stroke. His talk, “Stroke Care: From Bedside to Bench and Back”, offered powerful insights into the latest innovations, research breakthroughs, and the evolving landscape of global stroke care.
The event was led by Dr. Jeyaraj Durai Pandian, Principal and Head of Neurology Department, CMC Ludhiana and President of the World Stroke Organization, along with Organizing Secretary, Dr. Ivy Anne Sebastian (Associate Professor, Neurology and Board of Directors-World Stroke Organisation), Dr. Amit Mahajan (Head, Department of Surgery, Eggleston Trustee Member), Dr. Navneet Chaudhary (Hon. Secretary, Professor Forest Eggleston Trust), and Mr. Piyush Kant (Treasurer, Professor Forest Eggleston Trust) and a dedicated organizing team. The event was graced by Dr. Ramandeep Kaur, Civil Surgeon, Ludhiana, as the Guest of Honour.
A highlight of the day was the International Scientific CME, which brought together over 200 participants, including Punjab government doctors, nurses, and experts from across the country. With multiple international and national guest speakers, along with a hands-on Mechanical Thrombectomy Workshop, the program strengthened clinical skills and enhanced collaborative learning in the field of stroke. A special nursing-focused session further empowered 30 government hospital nurses with essential training in stroke management.
This landmark event once again underscores CMC Ludhiana’s unwavering commitment to advancing stroke research, capacity building, and healthcare excellence, while keeping alive the visionary legacy of Professor Eggleston.
The academic engagements continued as the visiting team from Canada and the team from CMC Advanced Stroke Centre met with the Honourable Health Minister of Punjab Dr Balbir Singh the following day, followed by guest lectures at PGIMER Chandigarh and SGPGI Lucknow to expand and strengthen collaborative stroke care initiatives across North India.

The Child Health Nursing Department, College of Nursing, Christian Medical College & Hospital (CMC&H), Ludhiana celebrated Children’s Day on 14 November 2025 at St. Thomas Senior Secondary School, Ludhiana. The programme, organised for 9th standard students, centred on the theme “For Every Child, Every Right; Strong Mind, Safe Bodies.” The event began with an invocation song, an action song, and the Word of God delivered by Rev. Nitin S. Cherian, setting a meaningful tone for the celebration.

The programme emphasized children’s right to education and the importance of empowering every child to develop a strong mind and a safe body. Prof. (Mrs.) Ritu P. Naihar, Vice Principal and HOD, Medical-Surgical Nursing, shared insightful perspectives on child rights. Prof. (Dr.) Premlata Prakash, Vice Principal and HOD, Child Health Nursing, unfolded the theme and encouraged educators to equip adolescents with essential knowledge on sexuality and sexual orientation.

Mrs. Elizabeth Scott, Assistant Professor, delivered an informative session on preventing child sexual abuse and harassment, offering students practical guidance and protective strategies. B.Sc. Nursing 6th-semester students reinforced learning through talks, a role play, and a poster exhibition on the same theme. Posters were judged by Prof. (Mrs.) Balqis Victor and Mrs. Neelu Sharma, and prizes were awarded to the winners.

The programme concluded with a vote of thanks by Ms. Anu Rajan and was warmly appreciated by school authorities and students.

100 MBBS students inducted in white coat ceremony in CMC
MBBS students are given clinical exposure from year one now. As a symbolic transition of the medical students prior to their first day of exposure to clinical teaching, white coat ceremony is conducted as part of the new course in MBBS i.e. Foundation course. This is done in order to emphasize the importance of their new role as budding doctors. This ceremony was held on the conclusion of the 2 weeks long ‘Foundation Course’ which is part of the revised MBBS competency-based curriculum 2024 of National Medical Commission (NMC) for the newly admitted 100 students of MBBS 2025 batch. . Dr. William Bhatti, Director, CMC conveyed his wishes to the newly admitted students. Dr Jeyaraj D. Pandian, Principal CMC administered the White Coat Ceremony oath to the newly admitted MBBS students. The students took oath to follow the medical ethical and professional ethos while serving the humanity as doctors. Students were vested with their white coats by their mentors i.e. Principal, Vice Principals and Phase 1 faculty, a timeless tradition where the faculty symbolically entrust them with the responsibilities, compassion and integrity of the medical profession. Foundation Course has been added for the fresh MBBS entrants so that they are ready to learn medicine and handle the life well in this demanding profession. Several experts conducted these sessions. The students appreciated the feeling of getting into the medical profession as they donned the white coats for the first time to become the Indian Medical Graduates.

CMC Vice Principal (ME) elected as NAMS Fellow

Dr Dinesh K Badyal, Vice Principal (ME), Prof & Head, Pharmacology CMC Ludhiana is elected as Fellows of the National Academy of Medical Sciences (NAMS). The fellowship was awarded on the 65th Convocation of NAMS held at PGI Chandigarh. The award of Fellowship of the Academy is an honour bestowed upon him as an acknowledgement of his academic excellence and professional achievements. Dr Badyal has contributed significantly to new competency based MBBS Pharmacology curriculum as Chairman of the NMC expert group and & MD Pharmacology curriculum as Convener of expert group. Dr. Badyal is extensively involved in training faculty of medical colleges all over India for the new curriculum and capacity development as Program director of CMCL-FAIMER Regional Institute and Convener, National Medical Commission (NMC) Nodal centre for faculty development, Christian Medical College, Ludhiana. DR. Badyal is Editor-in-Chief National Journal of Pharmacology & Therapeutics. He has published >190 papers, authored 4 books and contributed chapters in many books. CMC Ludhiana Shines at ACOIN – 2025!

Dr. Nitin Batra, Professor & Head, Department of Ophthalmology, CMC Ludhiana was awarded the “ACOIN 2025 Commemorative Oration” for his presentation on “Collaboration between the WSF, Government and CMC Ludhiana,” at the 24th International Assembly of Community Ophthalmologists organised by ACOIN at IHBT-CSIR, Palampur. Dr Batra received the award from the Health Minister of Himachal Pradesh, Dr (Col) Dhani Ram Shandil and Mr Ashish Butail, MLA Palampur (Kangra). This award is in recognition of his “Untiring, dedicated and sincere commitment towards the Implementation of Community Eye Health Care Services in the Indian Sub Continent “.

In the Free Paper and Rapid Fire Sessions, Dr. Nischay Shajan, won the Professor Usha Singh (PGI, Chandigarh) Award for his presentation on “RNFL thickness in patients with type 2 DM”, Dr. Palak Wadhera was awarded the Dr. Navendu Rai (Uttar Pradesh) Award for her paper on “Awareness of DR in DM patients”, and Dr Akanksha Kaur was honoured with the Dr. Meghna Roy Award (West Bengal). She presented her study on “Refractive Errors in UG students in CMC Ludhiana”.
