FREE HLA TYPING CAMP AND AWARENESS SESSION ON STEM CELL TRANSPLANTATION HELD AT GMC AMRITSAR
Amritsar, 1st July 2025 – A Free HLA Typing Camp and Awareness Session on Stem Cell Transplantation was successfully held at the Thalassemia Ward, Government Medical College (GMC), Amritsar. The event was jointly organized by the Department of Pediatrics, GMC Amritsar and Department of Clinical Haematology and BMT, Christian Medical College (CMC) Ludhiana, and was the first such camp following the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Punjab Government, represented by the Honourable Health Minister Dr. Balbir Singh, and CMC Ludhiana. The MoU aims to strengthen thalassemia care and stem cell transplantation services in the state.
The event was inaugurated by Dr. Manmeet Kaur Sodhi, Professor & Head, Department of Pediatrics, GMC Amritsar, who highlighted the commitment of GMC Amritsar in giving the well-deserved care at the Thalassaemia day care center. The camp was graced by Dr. J P Atri, Vice-Principal, GMC Amritsar, as the Chief Guest. In his address, Dr. Atri lauded the collaborative effort between government and private institutions to provide curative treatment for thalassemia to the underserved population of Punjab.
The event witnessed an attendance of over 200 people, including patients, families, medical professionals, and volunteers.
The scientific sessions began with Dr. Shruti Kakkar (CMC Ludhiana) delivering a talk on Comprehensive Care and Clinical Evaluation in Thalassemia. Dr. M. Joseph John, Professor & Head, Department of Clinical Haematology, Haemato-Oncology, and Bone Marrow Transplantation at CMC Ludhiana, presented a detailed session on Basics of Stem Cell Transplantation in Thalassemia, followed by an interactive Q&A.
In his address, Dr. Joseph John highlighted that transplant is a team effort and the current cost of stem cell transplantation ranges from Rs. 12-15 lakhs. He emphasized that this cost can be significantly subsidized—making transplants nearly free—through schemes such as the Thalassaemia Bal Sewa Yojana (providing Rs. 10 lakhs per transplant), and through collaborations with the Sir Ratan Tata Trust, DKMS, Uniparts Gift of Hope Patient Support Program, Vardhman Patient Support Fund, Pahuja Trust, and other well-wishers of the city. He further shared that efforts are ongoing to subsidize post-transplant care costs and to create provisions for local accommodation in Ludhiana during the critical 3-to-6-month post-transplant period. It is now possible to do an almost free transplant for a patient from Punjab.
Dr. Joseph John also stressed that stem cell transplantation is a curative option for thalassemia, offering children the hope of a life free from the burden of regular blood transfusions.
A deeply inspiring moment of the event was when 3 post-transplant patients from CMC Ludhiana hailing from Amritsar itself, addressed the audience:
Ms. S (Ex- Thalassaemia major) (post-transplant 2 years; matched unrelated donor transplant with a German donor)
Ms. J (Ex Thalassaemia major) (post-transplant 10 years; related donor transplant with her brother as the donor)
Both young girls, along with their mothers, shared their experiences and described how they have overcome the challenges of thalassemia to lead normal, healthy lives today and attending regular schools.
Mrs P who had undergone stem cell transplantation for multiple myeloma by autologous stem cell transplant 6 years ago impressed upon the need for routine yogo and keeping a positive outlook.
The camp’s key activity—Free HLA Typing through collaboration with DKMS—enabled 20 patients to undergo testing for donor matching, an essential step towards planning for transplantation. This meeting was also attended by the District Education officer Mr Amar Bahadur.
The event concluded with a reaffirmation of the shared commitment of GMC Amritsar, CMC Ludhiana, and their partners to work towards a thalassemia-free future for Punjab’s children through the public private partnership.
