Research reveals a strong link between poor dental health and faster brain shrinkage in regions critical to memory—raising new concerns about the impact of oral hygiene on cognitive aging.

Published in Neurology, the study tracked 172 older adults over four years, using dental assessments, memory evaluations, and brain scans. Researchers found that individuals with both gum disease and tooth loss experienced more rapid shrinkage in the left hippocampus—a brain region deeply involved in memory and one of the first areas affected in Alzheimer’s disease.

While the study doesn’t prove a direct cause-and-effect relationship, it adds to a growing body of evidence suggesting oral health may influence brain aging.

The link also varied with the severity of gum disease. Among those with milder gum problems, losing teeth was tied to greater brain atrophy. However, in participants with severe gum disease, keeping more natural teeth was paradoxically linked to worse brain outcomes—possibly due to the inflammation caused by infected tissue.

The findings point to an important message: preserving healthy gums may be just as crucial as saving teeth when it comes to brain health. Regular dental care could be a surprisingly effective step in reducing the risk of cognitive decline.

Cavities don’t wait; every day of delay means deeper damage.

Tooth decay is not like a cut on the skin that can heal by itself. Once bacteria break through the enamel and start destroying the tooth structure, the damage is permanent. Without professional treatment, that small spot of decay only grows larger with time.

In the early stage, a cavity may just look like a tiny black dot on the tooth surface. At this point, it may cause little or no pain — which is why many people ignore it. But inside, bacteria are actively dissolving the enamel and creeping into the softer dentin beneath.

As the decay spreads, the cavity becomes deeper, wider, and harder to treat. Eventually, it can reach the nerve inside the tooth, leading to severe pain, infection, and even the risk of tooth loss. In advanced cases, untreated dental infections can spread beyond the mouth, affecting the jawbone and even overall health.

The truth is simple: cavities never reverse naturally. Fluoride and good oral hygiene can slow down very early changes, but once a true cavity forms, only a dentist can remove the decay and restore the tooth.

Ignoring that “small hole” today means facing root canals, extractions, or costly dental work tomorrow. The earlier decay is treated, the easier, quicker, and more affordable it is to save the tooth.

চারশো বছর আগেই ‘ব্রেসেস’! দাঁত বাঁচাতে সোনার তার ব্যবহার করেছিলেন এক অভিজাত নারী

১৭শ শতকের এক ফরাসি অভিজাত নারী অ্যান দালেগ্র (Anne d'Alegre) মারা যান ১৬১৯ সালে। প্রায় ৪০০ বছর পর, তাঁর দেহাবশেষ বিশ্লেষণ করে বিজ্ঞানীরা এক চমকপ্রদ তথ্য আবিষ্কার করেন—তিনি দাঁত ধরে রাখতে সোনার তার ব্যবহার করেছিলেন!

১৯৮৮ সালে ফ্রান্সের Château de Laval দুর্গে তাঁর মরদেহ আবিষ্কৃত হয়। একটি সীসার তৈরি কফিনে সংরক্ষিত থাকার কারণে তাঁর দেহাবশেষ উল্লেখযোগ্যভাবে ভালো অবস্থায় ছিল।

সম্প্রতি আধুনিক "কোন বিম স্ক্যান" (Cone Beam CT) প্রযুক্তির মাধ্যমে বিশ্লেষণ করে দেখা গেছে, দাঁতের ক্ষয় ঠেকাতে ও দাঁতগুলো জোড়া ধরে রাখতে তিনি কয়েকটি দাঁতের চারপাশে সোনার তার জড়িয়ে রেখেছিলেন। আশ্চর্যের বিষয়, একটি দাঁতের জায়গায় হাতির দাঁতের তৈরি কৃত্রিম দাঁতও বসানো ছিল!
