People without emotions would be like a Robot. Joy, Sadness, Anger, Fear and Disgust are the basic emotions. These emotions plays a major role in developing one's personality. These little emotions are great Captains of our lives and we obey them without realizing it. Being in touch with your feelings will make you a better person as well as a better parent and partner. Being true to your emotions makes you feel better about yourself, for you’re able to be authentic.
When we choose to bury our feelings, we act differently. We may not make ourselves available to others and may withdraw, or just not be fully engaged when we do spend time with other people. At other times, we can react inappropriately because our emotions are pulling us in a different direction from where we really want or need to go.
Suppose something very bad happens to you that causes you a great deal of emotional pain. Now there are three possible things that you could do:
1. Fix whatever went wrong if possible
2. Express your bad emotions if you can’t fix what went wrong
3. Suppress your emotions by denying that something painful happened to you.
While actions 1 and 2 are the most appropriate ways to deal with your emotions, action 3 can have negative consequences.
Of Course action 2 is the most appropriate way to deal. When life gives you an emotional jerk It's normal to feel sad, angered, fear or disgust. Expressing these negative emotions are equally important for you. But remember there is a fine line between being emotionally balanced and depression. Whenever life gives you a jerk, you get pushed across that fine line. You feel sad, stay there for a certain period of time and come back. But if you keep crying over and over again for the same reason one day you’ll find that you juz can't come back from that depressed state. These emotions are temporary state of mind don't let them destroy you permanently. Feelings are just visitors, let them come and go.
Action 3, on the other hand, can have very harmful effects on your psyche and well-being. As a result these unexpressed emotions will never die. They are buried alive and will come forth later in uglier ways. Unexpressed emotions tends to stay in body like small ticking bombs- they are illnesses in incubation.
When you choose not to express ur feelings then there comes a stage of Emotional Numbness.
In order to deny that something painful happened to you, you try to keep yourself so busy with work that you don't let yourself give time to think about that bad moment that happened to you. Just because you don't want to go through this painful phase, you always try to keep a busy hectic schedule. And you never get to know when you become numb to these emotions.
The worst part about being so numb, is there will come a time when you want to feel something, but you won't know how to.
Expressing negative emotions are equally important and suppressing them can cause depression, low self-esteem and in some extreme cases physical illnesses! Depression is not being sad or wearing black. Depression is a constant feeling of being numb to emotions, to life.
Emotions should never be suppressed but acknowledged and dealt with by doing something about them like taking actions to fix what went wrong and if that's not possible then expressing your emotions in some is a good option.
You can express your emotions by talking about them, writing about them, redirecting them to the right people. Feelings are indicators, not dictators. They can indicate where your heart is the moment. But that doesn't mean they have the right to boss you around...
