"Together, let us raise awareness, dispel misconceptions, and ensure that no one affected by leprosy is left behind."

Leprosy is treatable, non-hereditary, and does not spread through casual contact. Multi-Drug Therapy (MDT) is available for free at all Government Health Centres and Hospitals in Goa.

In this post, we dive into some of the most common myths about leprosy and provide the facts to set the record straight. From clarifying that leprosy is not a curse, to explaining how it does not cause body parts to fall off, it’s crucial to understand the truth. By spreading awareness and breaking down these misconceptions, we can help fight the stigma and work towards a leprosy-free future.

"Together, let us raise awareness, dispel misconceptions, and ensure that no one affected by leprosy is left behind."

Leprosy is caused by the bacterium Mycobacterium leprae and is spread through prolonged contact over time. It often shows as patches on the skin with a loss of sensation. However, once treatment starts, patients quickly become non-infective. Multi-Drug Therapy (MDT) is available for free at all Government Health Centres and Government Hospitals in Goa.

Leprosy is not a result of past sins or immoral behavior. It is a bacterial infection that can be cured with proper treatment. Let’s focus on educating communities to eliminate age-old myths and encourage understanding and empathy.

Let’s ensure that we respect everyone and encourage more compassionate language, reducing the stigma for those affected.

It is essential to recognize that 'l***r' is a derogatory term. People affected by leprosy are not defined by the disease. Instead, use the term 'a person affected by leprosy.' Misunderstanding and stigma around this disease have persisted for too long, but leprosy can be cured, just like many other diseases, with proper treatment and care.

Let’s ensure that we respect everyone and encourage more compassionate language, reducing the stigma for those affected.

“Together, let us raise awareness, dispel misconceptions, and ensure that no one affected by leprosy is left behind.”

This is the theme for the Sparsh Leprosy Awareness Campaign of 2025.

Leprosy is caused by the bacterium Mycobacterium leprae and is spread through prolonged contact of 20 hours per week for 3 months. It often shows as patches on the skin with a loss of sensation. However, once treatment starts, patients quickly become non-infective. Multi-Drug Therapy (MDT) is available for free at all Government Health Centres and Government Hospitals in Goa.

Education is the right of every person, regardless of health conditions. Leprosy is not highly contagious, and those affected have the same right to education as everyone else. As teachers and students, let’s stand up for their rights and ensure they are not left behind.

Anaemia, particularly iron deficiency anaemia, poses serious risks to both mothers and newborns, leading to complications like postpartum hemorrhage, premature birth, and low birth weight.

To combat this, the State Family Welfare Bureau, Directorate of Health Services, Goa, conducts haemoglobin testing for newly married individuals soon after marriage registration.

If anemia is detected, immediate treatment and guidance are provided at government health centers.

We urge all newly married couples to get their haemoglobin levels tested as a critical step toward ensuring anaemia-free pregnancies and healthier future generations.

Today, on World Su***de Prevention Day 2024, we stand united to break the silence surrounding su***de and mental health. Every conversation can be a lifeline, a step towards healing, and a chance to save a life.

Su***de is preventable, but it starts with a simple yet powerful act: listening. By opening up dialogue and creating a supportive environment, we can help those in need feel heard and valued.

If you or someone you know is struggling, remember that it's okay to ask for help.
Reach out to the Telemans Helpline at 14416—your call could be the first step towards healing.

Psychiatrist, Dr. Tanvi Pednekar, from the District Mental Health Program at North District Hospital, Mapusa Goa, encourages everyone to start the conversation:
"Together, we can save lives."

Let’s come together as a community to break the stigma. You’re never alone, and there’s always someone ready to listen.
