ആയുർവേദ പാഠശാല.
കുട്ടഞ്ചേരി മൂസിൽ നിന്നാണ് ഗുരുകുല സമ്പ്രദായത്തിൽ പി.എസ്. വാരിയർ ആയുർവേദം അഭ്യസിച്ചത്. വൈദ്യപഠന കാലത്തുണ്ടായ ക്ലേശങ്ങളാണ് അതിനെ അനായാസമാക്കുന്നതിനുള്ള മാർഗങ്ങൾ തേടാൻ അദ്ദേഹത്തെ പ്രേരിപ്പിച്ചത്.
1909 ൽ കൊച്ചി, തിരുവിതാംകൂർ, മലബാർ മേഖലകളിലെ വൈദ്യന്മാരെയും പൗര പ്രമുഖന്മാരെയും ഉൾക്കൊള്ളിച്ചുകൊണ്ട് അദ്ദേഹം ആര്യവൈദ്യ സമാജം രൂപീകരിച്ചു. ആയുർവേദ വിദ്യാഭ്യാസത്തിന്റെ നവീകരണം ആയിരുന്നു അതിന്റെ പ്രമുഖ ഉദ്ദേശ്യം.
1917 ജനുവരി 14 ന് ആര്യവൈദ്യ സമാജത്തിന്റെ പതിനഞ്ചാം വാർഷികത്തോട് അനുബന്ധിച്ചാണ് ആയുർവേദ പാഠശാലയുടെ ഉദ്ഘാടനം കോഴിക്കോട് നടന്നത്. അന്നത്തെ സാമൂതിരിപ്പാടായിരുന്നു അത് നിർവഹിച്ചത്.
വിഷവൈദ്യനുംകൂടിയായിരുന്ന കൊച്ചി ഏഴാംകൂർ കൊച്ചുണ്ണി തമ്പുരാൻ യോഗത്തിൽ അധ്യക്ഷത വഹിച്ചു.
ആര്യവൈദ്യ സമാജം തയ്യാറാക്കിയ പാഠ്യപദ്ധതി അനുസരിച്ചാണ് ആര്യവൈദ്യപാഠശാലയിൽ ക്ലാസുകൾ എടുത്തിരുന്നത്. പി.എസ്. വാരിയർ വിദ്യാർത്ഥികളെ ശരീര ശാസ്ത്രം പഠിപ്പിച്ചിരുന്നു. 4 വർഷം ആയിരുന്നു പഠനകാലം. “ആര്യവൈദ്യൻ” എന്ന ബിരുദമാണ് നൽകി യിരുന്നത്. 1924 ൽ പി.എസ്. വാരിയർ ആയുർവേദ ധർമ്മാശുപതി കോട്ടയ്ക്കലിൽ സ്ഥാപിച്ചപ്പോൾ ചികിത്സയിൽ ഉള്ള പരിചയംകൂടി വിദ്യാർത്ഥികൾക്ക് കിട്ടണം എന്ന ഉദ്ദേശ്യത്തോടെ പാഠശാല കോഴിക്കോട് നിന്ന് കോട്ടയ്ക്കലിലേയ്ക്ക് മാറ്റി സ്ഥാപിച്ചു. കേരള സംസ്ഥാന രൂപീകരണത്തിനുശേഷം കേരളത്തിലെ എല്ലാ ആയുർവേദ കോളേജുകളിലും ആയുർവേദ ഡിപ്ലോമ കോഴ്സുകൾ ആരംഭിച്ചപ്പോൾ ഇവിടെയും അതാരംഭിച്ചു. 1959 ൽ ആയുർവേദപാഠശാല ആയുർവേദ കോളേജായി മാറി.
1972 ൽ കോളേജ് കാലിക്കറ്റ് യൂണിവേഴ്സിറ്റിയുമായി അഫിലിയേറ്റ് ചെയ്യപ്പെട്ടു ആ വർഷം മുതൽ ബി.എ.എം. കോഴ്സ് തുടങ്ങി. 1976 മുതൽ കേരള ആയുർവേദിക് സ്റ്റഡീസ് ആന്റ് റിസർച്ച് സൊസൈറ്റിയുടെ ഭരണസംവിധാനത്തിനു കീഴിലാണ് കോളേജ് പ്രവർത്തിക്കുന്നത്.
1979 ൽ സി.സി.ഐ.എം. നിർദ്ദേശങ്ങൾക്കനുസരിച്ച് ആ കോഴ്സസ് ബി.എ.എം.എസ്. ആയി നവീകരിക്കപ്പെട്ടു.
ആയുർവേദ പാഠശാല, 1979 മുതൽ വൈദ്യരത്നം പി.എസ്. വാരിയർ ആയുർവേദ കോളേജ് എന്ന് പുനർനാമകരണം ചെയ്തു. പിന്നീട് 2001 ൽ മനോവിജ്ഞാനവും മാനസരോഗവും എന്ന വിഷയത്തിൽ ബിരുദാനന്തര ബിരുദവും കോളേജിൽ ആരംഭിച്ചു. തുടർന്ന് അഗദം, പഞ്ചകർമ്മം, ദ്രവ്യഗുണം, ശല്യത്രന്തം, സംഹിത, സ്വസ്ഥവൃത്തം എന്നീ വിഭാഗങ്ങളിലും ബിരുദാനന്തര ബിരുദം തുടങ്ങി.
ഇന്ത്യയിലെത്തന്നെ മികച്ച ആയുർവേദ കോളേജുകളിൽ ഒന്നാണ് കോട്ടയ്ക്കലിലെ വൈദ്യരത്നം പി.എസ്. വാരിയർ ആയുർവേദ കോളേജ്. കേരള യൂണിവേഴ്സിറ്റി ഓഫ് ഹെൽത്ത് സയൻസുമായി അഫിലിയേറ്റ് ചെയ്തിരിക്കുന്നു. കോട്ടയ്ക്കലിന്റെ ആയുർവേദ പൈതൃകത്തെ മുന്നോട്ട് നയിക്കുന്നതിൽ കോളേജ് പ്രധാനപ്പെട്ട പങ്ക് വഹിക്കുന്നു.
Ayurveda Patasala(Ayurvedic College)
PS Varier learned ayurveda under the 'gurukula system' from Kuttancheri Mooss.The trials and tribulations he faced during his student years made him think of making the study of Ayurveda more simple.
In 1903 he formed the 'Arya Vaidya Samajam' by bringing together the physicians and other eminent personalities from Kochi, Thiruvithamkoor and Malabar. In 1917 during the 15th anniversary of Samajam ,the 'ayurveda Patasala' was inaugurated in Calicut. The Samoothini of those times did the honors and made the event more memorable.
Kochi Ezhamkoor Kochunni, a renowned Visha Vaidya(doctor who treats Snake bite cases) was the chairperson of the program.
The syllabus in the ayurveda Patasala was decided by the samajam itself. for them. In 1959 the Ayurveda Patasala was rechristened as "Ayurvedic College". In 1972 , the college became affiliated to Calicut university and BAM course was also started
PS Varier used to take anatomy classes 4 years was the course duration and the course was named "Aryavaidyan”. In 1924 ,a Charitable hospital was started in Kottakkal and the Patasala was shifted here so that the students would be able to get some first hand clinical experience. Following the formation of the Kerala State', a Diploma course in Ayurveda was started by the other colleges and we also followed suit.
in the same year. From the year 1976, the college started functioning under the by-laws proposed by Kerala Ayurvedic Studies and Research Society. In 1979, under the guidance of CCIM the course was revamped and it became BAMS. In the same year the college was again renamed as Vaidyaratnam PS Varier Ayurveda College.
In 2001 a PG course was started in the subject Manovijyana and Manasaroga(ayurvedic psychiatry). This was followed by PG courses in Agada(poison ),Panchakarma(the 5 therapeutic procedures),Dravyaguna(pharmacology and pharmacognosy),salyatantra(surgery),samhitha(study of ayurvedic literature ) and svasthavritha(preventive and social medicine).
Vaidyaratnam PS Varier Ayurveda College, Kottakkal has become one of the finest ayurvedic colleges in India Nowadays it is affiliated to Kerala university of health sciences. This college is undoubtedly one among the main pillars which support the rich ayurvedic legacy of Kottakkal.
