VASANT RITUCHARYA :IMMUNITY BOOSTER FOR SPRING SEASON

Falguna and Chaitra constitute Vasant Ritu in certain regions of India, such as Odisha and West Bengal., while Chaitra and Baishakha comprise Vasant Ritu in North India.

During VasantRitu kapha becomes aggravated there by diminishing jatharagni ( digestive fire) and body strength, which can lead to lethargy and various diseases. So the primary focus of Vasant Ritucharya will be on mitigating the aggravated kapha.

DIET ЁЯН▓
To alleviate kapha, focus on easily digestible, dry ( low fat with minimal moisture ), hot ( in touch and potency)food items. Incorporate more of bitter ( tikta) , pungent ( katu) and kasaya ( astringent) taste in diet.
Recommended foods include one year barley, wheat, honey, seasonal vegetables like bitter gourds, bottle gourds, , garlic, leafy greens like amaranth,in pulses take moong dal. (* roasted vegetables with no oil like bhartas are good)) . Non vegetarian can consume barbecued meats ( meat of animals of desert like land), dry fish etc.
Beverages like lukewarm water mixed with honey ( don't consume honey with hot liquids, only lukewarmliquid is advised, ), water infused with nut grass ( jalada), or ginger or dry ginger should be consumed, butter milk is also a good option.

LIFESTYLE ADJUSTMENTS ЁЯПГтАНтЩВя╕П
Exercise is an effective way to mitigate kapha, Udvartana ( dry massage), bathing in lukewarm water, gurgling or mouth washing with medicated liquids ( kavala and gandusha), Ayurvedic nasal drops ( nasya) and therapy like vamana ( emesis) are prescribed .

AVOID
Refrain from consuming foods that are difficult to digest, cold items and foods having cold potency as well as fatty, sour and sweet foods . It is to avoid curd and day time sleeping as they can aggravate Kapha.

In vasant ritu (the spring season), due to aggravated Kapha and reduced digestive fire, immunity decreases and individuals become more susceptible to diseases such as colds, flu, rhinitis, allergies, urticaria, anorexia, and many others, resulting in frequent visits to doctors. Consequently, Vasant Ritu is known as Vaidyamata (Mother of Doctors). However, adhering to Vasant Ritucharya will undoubtedly ensure overall well-being.

In some parts of India (Odisha, West Bengal), Vasant Ritu has already begun, but in North India, Shishir Ritu is running and will soon enter Vasant Ritu after Holi, so technically North India is in a transition period (Ritusandhi kala). The regimen of Ritusandhi kala (between Shishir and Vasant) should be practiced. Shishir Ritucharya is the same as Hemanta. (To know about Shishir Ritucharya, refer to my previous post on Ritucharya where Hemant ritucharya is described.) I will be posting on Vasant Ritucharya soon. Stay connected. Thank you ЁЯЩП.

RITUCHARYA: AYURVEDIC SEASONAL REGIMEN
As humans are integral part of the environment, changes in environment during various seasons affect our physiology. To cope with seasonal changes Ayurveda prescribes dietary and lifestyle guidelines , known as Ritucharya, where Ritu means season and Charya means regimen or discipline. This preserve health throughout the year.
Ayurvedic Samhitas divide the year in to six seasons. They are Varsha ( rainy season), Sharad (Autumn), Hemant ( Early winter), Shishir ( late winter), Vasant ( spring)and Grishma ( summer), with the first three belonging to Visharga Kala ( dakshinayan) and last three to Adana kala ( uttarayan). (( earth's position relative to Sun gives rise to to ayans or Kala)). As seasons change the dynamics of tri doshas ( vata, pitta and kapha) fluctuate, influencing human physiology. This causes the variations of Bala ( bodily strength ) and agni ( digestive and metabolic fire).considering these factors, seasonal regimens are designed.
Let's explore the regimens for the ongoing Sharad ritu ( Autumn) and forthcoming Hemant ritu ( early winter), including Ritusandhi ( transition phase of two consecutive seasons)
SHARAD RITUCHARYA AUTUMNREGIMEN)::
In Sharad ritu pitta is naturally aggravated, potentially causing blood related disorders, increased anger, burning sensations etc. With medium body and agni ( digestive and metabolic fire) a pitta samak ( pitta pacifying) regimen is advised.
DIET:
diet should emphasize sweet, bitter and tastes, prioritizing bitter and advised reduced intake of salty, sour and pungent tastes. Prefer easily digestible food having cold potency. Have rice, wheat, barley, green grams, rock sugar (dhaga mishri), Indian gooseberry (amla), black resins, pointed gourds and A2 milk daily. Other recommended foods include ragi millet, Jowar, red lentils ( masoor), pigeon pea, seasonal vegetables like bitter gourds, pumpkins, ridge gourds, leafy vegetables, fruits like custard apples, papaya, grapes can also be taken ( each twice a week). Ghee should be preferred over oils but coconut oil is acceptable. Tikta ghrita ( a medicated ) is specially prescribed. Beverages like water infused with amla or black resins and coconut water are good.
LIFESTYLE:
light and loose clothing should be preferred. Body massage with coconut oil, followed by sandal wood or cus cus grass powder massage. Evening should be enjoyed under moon light.
AVOID:
avoid exposure to sunlight (early morning sunlight is ok), satiate with hearty meal, use of curds, oil, muscle fat, fermented products, meat of aquatic animals, sleeping in the day time and eastern breeze.

HEMANT RITUCHARYA (EARLY WINTER REGIMEN)::
Hemanta ritu is considered the best season for health ( as no doshas are accumulated or aggravated), Characterized by high body strength and agni.
DIET:
To counter balance high agni, focus should be on sweet, sour and salty flavors. Consume unctuous warm and heavy food items. Recommend foods include new rice, barley, bajra ( pearl millets), pulses like green and black grams, kidney beans, chickpeas etc ( given more importance to black grams), one can consume various meats, milk and milk products, sugarcane derivatives and fermented foods and drinks, hot beverages ( best season for foodies)
LIFESTYLE,:
lifestyle adjustments involve intensive exercise regimen ( following ayurvedic guidelines for exercise), body and head massage with oil( preferred sesame oil ), sun bath, application of ubtan and lukewarm water bath.
AVOID:
Dry m cold and light foods and beverages, fasting, exposure to cold wind and sleeping in the day time.

CONCEPT OF RITUSANDHI::
Ritusandhi refers to the 14-day transitional period between two seasons, comprising the last seven days of one season and the initial seven days of the next season. During this phase it is advised to gradually discontinue the regimen of the ongoing season and gradually adoption of the succeeding seasonal regimen to prevent disease onset due to non-habituation.

In Ayurveda, Ritucharya serves as a preventive approach, maintaining health and enhancing individuals immunity. It can also be modified according to specific health issues.

To learn more please reach out to an Ayurvedic expert ЁЯЩП.

Note: The habits of using all six tastes every day is ideal for maintenance of hea, however during particular season the particular tastes should be given priority .

Ritucharya for the remaining seasons will be available soon, please stay connected.

Japanese Hara hachi bu and Ayurveda

Hara hachi bu is an old and common saying in Japan which says about filling up the stomach up to 80% of its capacity, which is repeated before or after every meal . They repeat, remind and follow the rule of 80% while eating and this is proved to be one among many secrets of Japanese healthy and long life.
Now let's discuss its relation to Ayurveda.The shloka given in the photo has been taken from Ashtanga hridaya where Maharshi Vagbhatta clearly mentioned the type of food and its quantity as well for a sound digestion .
According to the shloka two parts of the stomach (i.e '50%) should be filled with solid food, one part by i.e 25% by liquid and the remaining one part i.e 25% should be kept vacant for air etc. So filling stomach with 50% solid and 25% liquid, i.e total 75% will benifit the digestive system resulting in overall good health. More over Ayurveda also dictates on what to , when to and how to eat and drink, and even how to prepare food for a healthy life. It is also proved that over eating or junk food etc account for lengthy and tiring digestive processes that accelerate cellular oxidation resulting in ageing. So eating up to 75% to 80% is just like antioxidants for body.
Ayurved has many more rules in the form of Sutras for a healthy lifestyle. (Note :all the Sutras are for healthy individuals or individuals having minor health issues, so before practicing any sutras take advice from an Ayurvedic doctor). Thank you.ЁЯЩП

Definition of Health according to Ayurveda
The Shloka written in Devanagari script is from Sushruta Samhita. Here, Maharshi Sushruta, the first sage surgeon has given a clear and accurate definition of health.
According to Maharshi Sushruta a person is known to be healthy (swastha) if he/ she has balanced or co-ordinated state of all Doshas (bio-energy) , agni ( factor responsible to for digestion and metabolism), dhatu(body tissues), malas (gross and subtle waste products) and above all pleased , happy or balanced state of soul , senses and mind.
Now let's elaborate the second line of the Shloka. It's depicting about mental fitness, the equilibrium and coordination between the subtle elements of the body, like a healthy person must have psychological, emotional and social fitness.The 3 subtle elements are indriya (senses) , Atma (the soul) and mana (mind), the 3 should be prasanna means delighted and in coordination.
In my view Maharshi Sushruta has defined health similar to WHO's definition of health, even finer than that, that too thousands of years ago.

Ayurveda and Prescriptions :

Many Ayurvedic medicines are being sold over the counter (OTC), people are buying and having it as per their wishes. For some people it works and for others it doesn't. Here prescription plays an important role.

According to Ayurveda how a disease progresses is determined by body type (prakriti/prakruti) of an individual .Same rules apply on medicines too.So according to body type a medicine works. One medicine can be given in so many different ways ,in different conditions, with different anupaan (vehicles). An Ayurvedic doctor applies Yukti ( evaluate prakriti, dosa, dusya, doses, anupan etc) to give you a perfect set of medicine which would work holistically.We not only prescribe medicines but also advise appropriate diet and lifestyle according to body type, disease and season.Thus it's very very important to have a prescription for an Ayurvedic medicine.ЁЯЩП
