Despite the availability of cardiac rehabilitation in India, few people who need it available this facility, therefore, the unmet need for cardiac rehabilitation is higher in India than in any country in the world.

Are you concerned about the memory loss of a friend or loved one? When you point out instances of forgetfulness do you hear things like β€œEveryone forgets things at times,” β€œat my age its normal to forget some things?” Is it normal to forget things as we get older?

Some degree of memory problems, as well as a modest decline in other thinking skills, is a fairly common part of aging. However, there is a difference between normal changes in memory and memory loss associated with Alzheimers disease and related disorders. And some memory problems are the result of treatable conditions.

If you are having memory problems or you suspect someone you know is having memory problems talk to your health care provider to get a diagnosis and appropriate care.

"It is not the mountain we conquer, but ourselves" were the wise words said by Sir Edmund Hillary. Returning from Annapurna Base Camp in a wheelchair nursing an injury to the lateral meniscus and ligament, Tejal started all from scratch. Learning how to bend her knee to trust herself to put weight on the injured leg to walking and running, her relentless, perseverance and hard work paid off when she completed her adventure at Tarsar Marsar Trek within 10 months. Osteoarthritis commonly an overlooked disease or being part of the ageing process is often taken for granted. Some just deal with the pain and disability that comes along with it and others who do consult physicians are put on medications to manage the pain, not being a long term solution.

A third or less of the people complaining osteoarthritis are advised or seek physiotherapy. Good quality rehabilitation with progressive training if not help avoid undergoing surgery definitely helps in recovery and getting back on feet faster.

Can exercise improve your memory?

The short answer is YES! Even a single bout of cardiovascular training has been shown to improve memory. The improvement in memory and retention may happen through numerous mechanisms such as improved blood flow to the brain; release of hormones such as irisin; and increased neuronal growth in the memory area of the brain. However, several factors such as exercise intensity, frequency, duration, and timing may have an impact on whether memory is improved and how long the memorized information is retained. For example, retention of new information has been demonstrated to be higher when learned immediately after moderate physical activity but not when the information was learned 30 min after the exercise. Information retention is also dependent on they type of information being learned. Some things may be better learned after short bouts of high intensity exercise and others after low/moderate intensity exercises.

Despite all this debate about the best way to memorize the information pertinent to you, what you need to remember is the any exercise is better than no exercise for all sorts of learning (whether it be exams or learning a new skill/language). These memory gains are seen in people of all ages (children and those >85 yrs). People with Alzheimers and other forms of degenerative dementias have also shown significant memory improvement with exercise.
