How to overcome Pandemic Anxiety

• Gratitude – say thanks for the loved ones that are still around and the tiniest of assets that you possess at present. Count your blessings for the day.

• Meditation – has been proven scientifically, to improve mental health.

• Help those in need. It could be as simple as providing food/medical assistance to a covid positive family or to the daily wage workers in your locality.

• Take care of yourself – Sleep well, eat well and exercise. Remember, you can only help others when you are healthy.

Getting vaccinated is the only way we can overcome this pandemic.
We all know that there will be logistic issues with distribution resulting at times in shortage of vaccines given the size of our population. The Human brain has evolved for survival. It is always scanning the environment for perceived threats. Whenever there is a perceived threat to our lives, the brain goes into “hypervigilance “mode. The adrenal glands release the hormone adrenaline in response to the threat (the flight, fight or fright response). Your body typically responds to this impending threat by dilation of pupils, tensing of the muscles, heart beating faster and sweat glands functioning at a faster rate producing perspiration. In case, we sustain a physical injury from this threat, for better clot formation liver releases more glucose into the bloodstream. We as a species have managed to survive because of these threat detecting mechanisms.

However, in case of prolonged uncertainty like the one this pandemic has created across the world, the “fight” and “flight” responses do not serve the purpose and the brain tends to go into the “fright” mode. This chronic state of alarm is what is known as ‘stress”. A number of clinical studies have established a causal relationship between stress and increased risk of Type 2 diabetes, blood pressure, heart diseases and development of clinical depression and anxiety.
