Myth: Probiotic supplements can “fix” your gut
Fact: Whilst some probiotic supplements might have benefits, they are certainly not a magic bullet and cannot “fix” your gut health
There is no clear consensus on which strains, doses and mixtures of probiotics are most effective. Instead, we recommended that you eat fermented foods high in beneficial bacteria like yogurt, kitchen, kombucha etc.
Myth: Apple cider vinegar can aid digestion
Fact: There is no clinical research to show that Apple Cider Vinegar can improve digestion. In fact, it might even increase acid reflux in some individuals. If insufficiently diluted, ACV can also erode tooth enamel and irritate the oesophagus.
Myth: You need to cut out food groups to look after your gut.
Fact: The biggest myth about the gut is that you need to have a restrictive diet to look after it. Looking after your gut (and overall health) is all about inclusivity, moderation and getting plenty of plant diversity. It’s far more about what you include than what you exclude.
Myth: Food intolerance tests will help diagnose my gut issues.
Fact: Unfortunately, scientists are yet to develop a suitable test for diagnosing food intolerances (with a breath test for lactose intolerance being the one exception).
Instead, as a dietitian, I follow a systematic process that I call the 3R process (Record, Restrict and Reintroduce) to determine what might be causing your symptoms.
