Why would Ayurveda still use leeches in modern clinical practice?
Leech therapy is known in Ayurveda as Jalaukavacharana, is a classical blood-letting procedure described in the Panchakarma texts.
This therapy is traditionally advised in conditions where there is local congestion, stagnation, inflammation, or excessive heat in the tissues. By allowing controlled removal of impure or vitiated blood, the body’s natural circulation and healing response is supported.
Medical leeches release bioactive substances through their saliva, which help improve microcirculation in the affected area. This process supports tissue nourishment and helps reduce local discomfort over time.
Leech therapy is commonly considered in conditions related to joint stiffness, localized swelling, varicose tendencies, skin-related concerns, and certain chronic pain patterns—only after proper clinical evaluation.
