He has served as Chief Editor of The Indian Practitioner, one of India’s oldest and foremost medical journals, for over six years. An exponent of existential monism, his no-nonsense attitude towards astrology stems from years of philosophical self-exploration, which taught him that the cornerstone of spirituality is to felicitously balance both reason and intuition. He sees astrology as rooted in the science of “complex systems”, which must be embraced as an invaluable tool for mapping and steering life instead of being dismissed as mystical fortune-telling. His syncretic approach combines the timeless principles of Vedic astrology with tested psychological techniques to facilitate inner transformation and address several of life’s problems and challenges.

Read Dr Soham's latest blog on The Times of India to understand why he strongly advocates a concrete understanding of complex systems among astrologers and its enthusiasts:

"You will get what you want when you learn to be comfortable without it"

At least that's what Saturn (Shani) tells you!

Beyond the cliches of hard work, humility, and suffering, very few people realize the true purport of Planet Saturn in Vedic astrology. The result - even fewer people are able to make the most of Saturn's beneficence in their lives.

Read Dr. Soham D. Bhaduri 's blog on The Times of India where he discusses the paradox of desire and what Saturn entails therewith:

THE TRUTH ABOUT ASTROLOGY, INTUITION, AND WHETHER AI CAN REPLACE ASTROLOGERS

(This article was originally published in Dr. Soham D. Bhaduri's blog on The Times of India)

Before we discuss the main topic of this piece, let’s have a quick look at the context that we have in hand. The world we inhabit, as I’ve covered in one of my previous blogs, is the grandest complex system there is. A complex system is one comprised of innumerable elements and processes interacting with one another in ways that are largely unpredictable. Given this inherently unpredictability, the best one can do is, frankly put, to make the best estimates and guesses about how things might turn out, keep an open mind, be ready to embrace change, and espouse a healthy amount of flexibility. If that sounds unscientific, let me tell you that the complex systems paradigm has been used exhaustively across both the hard and soft sciences to gain unprecedented insights into how everything from human physiology to corporate organizations operate. And even if we let all of these aside, isn’t that how life itself works?

When I speak of astrology as embedded in the science of complex systems, what I really suggest is that astrology is a system that can help us navigate part of the complex and unpredictable world that we live in by indicating the probabilities that are likely to manifest in our lives. As you would have understood by now, that’s how all complex systems are meant to be navigated. And the world that we live in being arguably the most complex system out there, any probabilities so indicated have smaller odds of coming true than, say, when the complex system in question is a corporate organization instead. But this is often precisely where the apostles of science lose it.

Not even a microscopic fraction of the over two-hundred-thousand-year-old history of modern humans has been spent in the luxury of having hard scientific evidence to back crucial day-to-day decisions. The primeval human foraging in the harsh savannahs had little more than educated guesswork at their disposal when faced with uncertain situations, and the fact that their lineage thrives to this day is proof that many of those educated guesses indeed worked as expected. Ever since the dawn of scientific cockiness, the term “intuition” has been so passionately mocked that the very meaning of the term has been lost on people. And intuition has been so widely misunderstood that many of us conflate it with stuff like supernatural faculties and oracular divination. Intuition is none of that.

At bottom, intuition is the ability, innate to all humans in varying degrees, to make fairly accurate guesses in view of the limited information that is available in situations where black and white truths remain elusive. Everything else, where accurate guesses appear out of nowhere and in the absence of even the minimum amount of information, can be termed divination. It should be obvious by now that the more complex the system, the more unpredictable it is likely to be – and the stronger the intuition that it calls for. And when this happens, intuition increasingly starts to seem like unscientific divination. But the truth remains that it isn’t.

Astrology deals with arguably the most complex system that there is. There are canonical rules for prediction that are enshrined in astrological texts, evolved over years of keen observation, which continue to be bolstered by scanty yet existent research. But given the unfathomable complexity of the system in question, it’s a bit rich to expect that these fixed, canonical rules can tell it all, all the time. In fact, more often than not, a simple and straightforward application of these rules for predictions leads the astrologer awry. With the kind of contextualization, relevance-making, and keen emotional intelligence that it calls for, a strong and sharp intuition often becomes the astrologer’s most powerful predictive tool.

And this is where the debate on whether artificial intelligence (AI) can replace astrologers enters the picture. AI has done wonders that could have easily been dismissed as far-fetched fantasies less than a couple of decades ago. There remains no doubt that a lot of astrology can be and has been automated. But as far as replacing astrologers is concerned, if anything, astrology can give AI a much harder time than, say, replacing medical doctors for diagnosing illnesses or software experts for all the abstruse stuff that they do – unless we succeed in creating AI systems that can replicate human intuition to perfection. This, however, is only so far as we are speaking of authentic, deep, and personalized astrology.

HOW ASTROLOGERS UNDERMINE ASTROLOGY
© Dr. Soham D. Bhaduri

(This article was first published on Dr. Soham's Blog on The Times of India)

Social media today is brimming with astrology groups and forums where lay people flock and scramble to obtain astrology advice for free.

Even those forums started with the intention of promoting a dignified discourse on the subject and discussing genuine astrological research are replete with people posting horoscopes with the expectation that a random astrologer will notice and answer their questions for free or little money. And many astrologers do respond and offer their services against derisory fees, if any at all. Either side is fraught with desperation – one expects to obtain important life advice for no money, the other wants to attract clients by hook or by crook. And what is inevitable in this process is the demise of sincere astrology.

But why do such astrologers even agree to analyse a horoscope, which involves numerous nuances and calls for deep mastery of the field, against no or paltry fees? The commonest answer astrologers give is that few people take astrology seriously (at least until bad times hit them) and are loath to pay a worthy amount against their services. Yet, how do these astrologers manage to keep their services going and afloat? Where exactly are the corners cut? As most of you would have guessed, this is mostly done by treating a horoscope cursorily, spending as little time as possible on any individual case, and delivering important life guidance in a matter of seconds.

No wonder that popular astrology aggregator apps and services have capitalized on this kind of market behaviour and are flourishing in India. The large majority of people visit these portals hoping to avail a free chat or a consultation as cheap and quick as possible, and astrologers vie to respond to this pressure by delivering the most appealing predictions in the shortest time possible.

My own experience with such aggregators bespeaks much of the tragedy that unfolds when speed and cheapness become the touchstones of good astrology. On one ridiculous occasion, an astrologer attributed my fictitious problem to an astrological yoga that doesn’t exist anywhere in the astrological literature. On other occasions, astrologers have failed to identify a nullified planetary debilitation (a beneficial yoga in astrology) or a rare planetary combination, and prescribed remedies that only stand to do more harm than good. Yet some others seemed to know little more about astrology than Kalsarpa Yoga and Pitradosh. It would be unfair not to remark that I have also come across some really gifted and perceptive astrologers on the same aggregator portals. And what is keenly painful is that the market judges and rewards them by the same yardsticks that they do for a quack.

For lay readers, I have penned a blog earlier on in this portal on why cheap and quick astrology can do more harm than good. My recommendation for the common man is to resort to astrology in two situations: one, when you approach astrology with an open mind and due seriousness; and two, when you are not serious about your life and money, whatever little of it you are ready to spend. It has to be either one of the two. If you happen to take astrology seriously while begrudging the time and money that you spend on it, you might be in for a calamity. For a field as unregulated as astrology, it is anybody’s guess what can be done to cut corners. Given that astrology deals with the most important areas of our lives, it is easy to understand what compromised predictions and guidance can do to life. Astrology’s apparent dearth of hard ‘scientific evidence’ remains a topic for another day, but until then, ask yourselves sincerely: how many things that we do in our everyday routines are backed by hard scientific evidence? And how many of those that aren’t nonetheless impact our practical lives significantly?

For astrologers, it is high time for introspection. Is it wise to pander to market demands in a way that steadily hurts your own craft and reputation? What shame in acknowledging that serious astrology, more often than not, calls for due time, effort, and compensation?

THINK IT'S ALL ABOUT FREE WILL? HERE'S WHY ASTROLOGY IS THE BIGGEST EGO BUSTER
© Dr. Soham D. Bhaduri

The majority of us are given to drawing a dichotomy between our free will and the workings of astrology. Some succumb to a fatalistic mindset that everything is pre-ordained, that what is destined is bound to happen ‘in spite of’ our will. On the opposite end of the spectrum, the self-confident lot writes off astrology as utter hogwash and ennobles free-will to unqualified supremacy, asserting that the only factor that counts in this inexhaustibly complex and enigmatic world that we live in is their own, mortal agency. Both these views are not only grossly mistaken but also highly dangerous. And much as we may fail to realize, both these views only reinforce the idea of an isolated ego – the only difference being that the latter view inflates the ego to blasphemous proportions while the former deflates it a little too much.

Subscribers particularly to the latter view, however, would have had numerous realizations along their lifetimes – and on most of these occasions failed to question themselves honestly – as to how many things in life are really within the ambit of human will. Even fewer of them, particularly those falling outside the philosophical clique, would have questioned themselves on what creates their will in the first place, or directs their will towards certain things and not towards others. Nevertheless, no sooner does the epiphany finally strike than we realize the small yet significant place our mundane will occupies among other significant forces of the world which we share our material realm with.

To count on free will as the supreme agency can rightly be called the most distorted form of metaphysical solipsism. And given how often such ideas are conflated with monistic philosophies and quantum physical theories about the self, it possesses as much of an intellectual-philosophical threat as one for the affairs pertaining to our intimate lives. This is nothing but a result of inadequate philosophical insight which fails us when it comes to drawing the right boundaries at the right places.

Although a detailed exposition on this matter is a topic for another day, one must become familiar with the concepts of ‘complex systems’ and ‘complexity science’ if they are interested in gaining any insight into the possible functionings of astrology and how they mingle with our will at every level.

Our world is the grandest complex system imaginable. A complex system is one formed of a plethora of interconnected elements, each influencing the other in ways that are intricate, non-linear, and often unpredictable. This unpredictability offers the possibility of new and unexpected patterns and events to emerge, explaining why not all astrological predictions can always be true. But it decisively posits our free will as part of an interconnected chain of elements where our will, just as others, has its own unique place in the system while being reliant on others at the same time. This inter-reliance, as well as our ability to study the system to a certain extent, makes it possible to predict patterns that our lives are likely to follow.

Such an understanding of astrology knocks down the illusory trammels of fatalism and allows room for exuberant free will to operate. At the same time, every time a horoscope is diligently examined, one is humbled to realize in retrospect how, all along that they held on to free will chauvinism, their egos danced along with elements way beyond their puny control. The inevitable result for most is that they better learn how to best work strategically with these elements, and at times against them.
