AI has become part and parcel of our lives. No matter how much we try to avoid it, it is already embedded in how we live and work. The real focus now is on ensuring that our skills, education systems and workplaces keep pace with it so we can use AI to our advantage.

In the upcoming episode of Insights Xchange, Nikesh Gosalia speaks with Tim Flagg, CEO of the UK AI Council, about what it takes to build real AI capability across the workforce. They discuss the need for earlier education, broader AI literacy, apprenticeships and leadership that is willing to learn and adapt as the technology evolves.

At CACTUS, these are questions we engage with closely through our work with publishers, researchers and institutions. Through solutions like Paperpal, Paperpal Preflight and our broader AI Solutions suite, we support research and publishing workflows at the intersection of AI and human expertise. We believe in combining advanced AI capabilities with expert human oversight, while keeping research integrity, ethics and responsible use at the center.

We’re pleased to share that our CEO, Akhilesh Ayer, has authored a thought-provoking article featured in The Hindu.

As India’s research ecosystem continues to evolve, one important question deserves attention: Are Indian universities preparing students for the world of academia?

In the piece, he reflects on the transition many students face when they first encounter independent research, the gaps in early research exposure and the broader institutional and policy shifts needed to better equip students for global academic environments.

For centuries, many women in research fought to have their names attached to their discoveries.

French mathematician Sophie Germain made groundbreaking contributions to number theory and Fermat’s Last Theorem, but because women were excluded from academic circles, she published under the pseudonym or ‘nom de plume’ - “M. LeBlanc.”

Throughout history, many other women used pseudonyms or initials simply to ensure their work would be read, reviewed and taken seriously in a world where women’s scholarship was often overlooked. Their stories are reminders of how far the research ecosystem has come and why visibility and recognition still matter.

This International Women’s Day, at CACTUS, we celebrate the women whose curiosity, resilience and discoveries continue to shape the future of research and scholarly publishing.

Looks like London is quickly becoming familiar territory for Team CACTUS this month. Before we return for LBF, we’re first headed to the Researcher to Reader Conference.

At this year’s conference, Nikesh Gosalia will be taking the stage to examine one of the most consequential questions facing scholarly publishing today: Does AI promote equity or division?

His session will explore whether AI is genuinely democratizing access to global knowledge or reinforcing existing digital biases, and what responsible, thoughtful adoption should look like across research and publishing ecosystems.

Joining the conference is also, Chris Leonard who will participate in a panel discussion focused on peer review looking closely at how the process can better serve researchers, authors, and readers alike. The discussion will address what stakeholders truly want from peer review and how it can evolve to be more transparent, constructive, and trustworthy.

If you’re attending the , we’d be glad to connect before London calls us back again.

Dear Research,

You’ve challenged us for over two decades.

Higher standards. Greater scrutiny. Bigger expectations for impact, access and integrity. At CACTUS, we’ve stayed committed through every shift in how research is created, evaluated and shared. Not because it’s easy but because it matters.

From safeguarding integrity and supporting editorial decisions to helping research reach the audience it deserves, we believe quality, trust and visibility are not trade-offs they’re responsibilities.

We’d never break your heart by cutting corners or by treating ethics, clarity, or impact as optional.

This Valentine’s Day isn’t about a grand gesture. It’s about long-term commitment to research done right, end to end.

With care and conviction,
CACTUS 💌
