This groups main intention is to create awareness about Cancer, Cancer Screening, Diagnosis and Treatment, Post therapy care Exclusively for Women.

Shakthi is Women Cancer Support Group created by Dr. Ramya Yethadka, who is a qualified Surgical oncologist and the only Lady cancer surgeon available in and around Mysore.

amount of struggle each survivor undergoes even after the completion of treatment is tremendous: financial, physical, emotional & social.. 1st Sunday of June is celebrated as Cancer Survivors' Day- a day to get inspired by people who have been diagnosed with Cancer, who have gone through the treatment... to celebrate their strength, resilience & perseverance...

Head & Neck Cancer Awareness Month - April..

First step involves examination by the Oncologist, which will give clinical confirmation of the disease & clinical staging.. Confirmation of the same is done by biopsy of the suspicious lesion.. (A small piece of tissue is removed under local anaesthesia & sent for pathological examination).. scanning in the form of ultrasound neck, CT scan / MRI will give the exact extension of the lesion or staging..

Treatment depends on the stage & site of disease..
Early disease - surgery might be the only treatment needed to cure the cancer in some cases..
Chemotherapy+/- Radiation are also part of treatment in majority of other stage cancers..

Early Stage Cancers of Mouth / head and neck are curable if treated..

Head & Neck Cancer Awareness Month - April

Symptoms of these cancers depend on the site of cancer origin
-Npn healing wound/ ulcer over lip/ mouth/ tongue/jaw/ palate
-inability to open the Mouth adequately ( Trismus)
-Spontaneous loosening/fall of teeth
-Ear pain
-Change in voice/ hoarseness
-swelling in the neck/ throat
- Difficulty in swallowing food/liquids
-Painful swallowing
-Cough
-Bleeding from nose/ mouth
- swelling near ears/ below the jaw

Never neglect any of these symptoms.. visit your Oncologist for thorough evaluation..

Head & Neck Cancer Awareness Month - April..

Who are at risk of developing these cancers ( Risk factors)? Few known causes are-

1.To***co - 70-90% of Head & Neck cancers are linked to To***co!!!! (Smoking beedi/ cigarette, Gutka/ pan chewing..)
2. Alcohol
3.Human Papilloma Virus (HPV)- a sexually transmitted virus, is associated with mouth & oropharyngeal cancers
4. Industrial exposure- inhalation of toxic fumes
5. Sharp teeth - causing chronic irritation, is a known cause of tongue & mouth cancers..

Thus , majority of Head & neck cancers are preventable!!

Head & neck cancer constitutes cancers of Lip, Mouth/ oral cavity, throat, nose, paranasal sinuses , salivary glands...

It's one of the most common cancers in India (when all sites are combined together)...

Lip+ oral cavity cancers are the 2nd most common cancer in India & 4th most common in Indian Women..( Globocan 2022)...
