भारतातील बालपोषणाचे संकट: “Stunting” आणि “Wasting” समजून घ्या

आज भारत एका गंभीर आरोग्य समस्येशी झुंज देतो आहे - बालकांमधील कुपोषण. भारतात जगातील सर्वाधिक बालकांमध्ये Wasting (कृशत्व) आहे - ५ वर्षांखालील सुमारे १८.७% बालके खूपच कृश आहेत. आणि अंदाजे ३७ दशलक्ष (३.७ कोटी) बालके Stunting (ठेंगणेपणा) ने ग्रस्त आहेत.

ही फक्त आकडेवारी नाही... ही आपल्या देशाच्या भविष्याची कहाणी आहे.

"Stunting” म्हणजे नेमकं काय?
सोप्या भाषेत: मुलाचं वयाप्रमाणे उंची कमी असणं. हे अचानक होत नाही... हे दीर्घकाळ पोषणाची कमतरता असल्यामुळे होतं.
उदाहरण: जर ३ वर्षांचं मूल उंचीत खूप मागे असेल, तर ते “stunted” असू शकतं. याचा परिणाम: मेंदूचा विकास कमी होतो, शिकण्याची क्षमता घटते, भविष्यात कमाईची क्षमता कमी होते. म्हणजेच फक्त उंची नाही, पूर्ण आयुष्य प्रभावित होतं.

"Wasting” म्हणजे काय?
सोप्या भाषेत: मुलाचं उंचीच्या मानाने वजन खूपच कमी असणं (म्हणजेच खूप बारीक, कृश दिसणं). हे बहुतेक वेळा अचानक किंवा अल्पकाळ पोषणाची कमतरता / आजारामुळे होतं.
उदाहरण: मूल खूप बारीक, हात-पाय सुकलेले, त्वचा सैल दिसते. याचा परिणाम: रोगप्रतिकारक शक्ती खूप कमी, वारंवार आजार, मृत्यूचा धोका जास्त. म्हणजेच ही तात्काळ धोकादायक स्थिती आहे.

फरक एका ओळीत:
Stunting = उंची कमी (दीर्घकालीन समस्या),
Wasting = वजन कमी (तात्काळ समस्या).

ही समस्या का होते?
एक public health nutritionist म्हणून स्पष्ट सांगते: पोट भरतंय, पण सकस अन्न नाही, जंक फूड वाढतंय, आईचं पोषण कमी, वेळेवर complementary feeding नाही, वारंवार संसर्ग / आजार. म्हणजेच - “लपलेली भूक” (Hidden Hunger).

उपाय काय?
मोठे बदल नेहमी छोट्या सवयींनी सुरू होतात: पहिल्या ६ महिन्यांत फक्त आईचं दूध, ६ महिन्यांनंतर योग्य, घरचं complementary feeding, दररोज कडधान्ये, भाज्या, फळं, जंक फूड शक्य तितकं टाळा, स्वच्छता आणि लसीकरण.

अंतिम संदेश: आजचं कुपोषण उद्याचं कमकुवत भारत बनवतं. प्रत्येक मूल उंच, मजबूत आणि बुद्धिमान व्हावं - ही फक्त आईची नाही, आपल्या सगळ्यांची जबाबदारी आहे.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO):

👶 **NORMAL BIRTH WEIGHT:**
• Baby Boy: 2.5 kg - 4.0 kg (5.5 - 8.8 lbs)
• Baby Girl: 2.5 kg - 4.0 kg (5.5 - 8.8 lbs)
• Average: 3.0 - 3.5 kg (6.6 - 7.7 lbs)

⚠️ **LOW BIRTH WEIGHT (LBW):**
Below 2.5 kg (5.5 lbs) - Requires medical attention

⚠️ **VERY LOW BIRTH WEIGHT:**
Below 1.5 kg (3.3 lbs) - Needs intensive care

⚠️ **HIGH BIRTH WEIGHT:**
Above 4.0 kg (8.8 lbs) - May indicate gestational diabetes

💡 **What Affects Birth Weight?**
✅ Maternal nutrition during pregnancy
✅ Prenatal care quality
✅ Mother's pre-pregnancy weight
✅ Gestational age at delivery
✅ Genetics and ethnicity
✅ Multiple pregnancies (twins, triplets)

🤰 **How to Support Healthy Birth Weight:**
• Balanced diet with adequate protein, iron, folate
• Regular prenatal check-ups
• Appropriate weight gain during pregnancy (11-16 kg for normal BMI)
• Avoid smoking, alcohol, and excessive stress
• Manage chronic conditions (diabetes, hypertension)
