Seva Kitchen

Seva Kitchen Seva Kitchen is an initiative which serves food to the needy Patients and Relatives of Patients in Hospitals, Cancer Hospice.

it also serves children with nutrition in underprivileged communities. Seva Kitchen was conceived in 2014 by Khushroo Poacha, a railway official whose mother was admitted in hospital for brain surgery at the time. Standing at a tea stall near the Central India Institute of Medical Science (CIIMS), Khushroo noticed over that period, that there were many people who had come from far-flung rural areas to visit a city hospital for treatment. Apart from the anxiety of waiting for their loved ones’ recovery, they could scarcely afford lodging and had to manage with make-shift shanties on the roadside. Further, with the hospital canteen shut on Sundays, they often had to struggle for food or cook a simple meal on the pavement with their meagre belongings. The idea for Seva Kitchen was born, when his mother suggested that he should do something to help these people. The idea of calling it Seva Kitchen, came with some deliberation. The name Seva Kitchen, quite literally, draws on the traditional value of selfless giving - a desire to serve or do Seva. Although it started off by making meals accessible to relatives of patients in hospital, the term Seva Kitchen continues to cover a broader ambit of addressing hunger needs. Towards this guiding principle is the belief that every kitchen, in every town, village or city is a Seva Kitchen. The provider of succor to those who are hungry, because every meal counts .

Seva Kitchen at Tata Memorial Completes 21000 meals seva

Every time I would speak to someone at Tata Memorial Hospital people, volunteers would say they don't have the time. It was so overwhelming.

What seemed impossible was made possible due to continuous efforts. Sanjeev Sharma founder of utsah foundation said YES. We started distributing tokens from outside the hospital. Did a tie up with the hospital canteen. In the October 23 we distributed 358 tokens. Last month we distributed about 1200 tokens. Though we had pledges of more than 4000 meals a month we did not have the bandwidth to distribute the tokens. We realised the problem was patients not going outside the hospital and it was difficult for one person to distribute tokens to so many people.

Now the magic of the missed call will scale up the token distribution system. People from inside the hospital can give a missed call on 9665500000 and get a free token by SMS. The paper tokens will be history soon.

Patience and Persistence pays. One meal at Tata Memorial costs just Rs 55/- . You can serve in multiples of 25 meals. Call us on 9561011264 to serve.

Seva Kitchen first Wall of Giving started at Mangalam Charitable Foundation Navi Mumbai. This wall will serve about 3000 people a month.

Advantages of the system.

1. The wall of giving is a smart android tv which can be deployed anywhere in the world in 15 minutes flat. The Restaurant, Canteen, Hospital just needs a smart tv with internet connection.

2. The restaurant, canteens receives money in advance for the number of tokens recharged. So its a win win situation for them.

3. Donors get an alert when their tokens are used. When their seva starts and ends. They get to see the reports online.

4. When no tokens are available the screen says Sorry no tokens available and prompts donors to recharge.

5. It creates an awareness about Seva Kitchen and its transparency. The wall shows the name of the persons whos seva is going on. We can even show the picture of the person. We have a provision. We can put the logo of a Company who wish to sponsor anything on the wall.

6. The wall will be used for other causes also. And we are working on it. We will show once done. We will promote the Festival of Giving from a few days ago om the Wall.

7. Most important we dont need to buy any equipment to run the seva.

6. The wall is multilingual. The content can be changed according to the local language.

Cheers to a new beginning.
