Lung cancer in women : Note on Doctor’s day

Lung cancer is the third most common cancer in women, behind breast and colorectal cancers, and the second leading cause of female cancer death. In the last 20 years there has been increased focus on gender differences in health and disease. Incidence of lung cancer women will be equal to men by 2030.

To***co remains the largest risk factor for lung cancer in women and they are at a higher risk than men in similar smoking exposure. However it has been found that In Asian populations, 60–80% of women with lung cancer have never smoked, in contrast to 10–15% of nonsmoking men.

Presentation of lung cancer is different in women in terms of lower age group, non smoking habit and presentation at less advanced stage.
Symptoms of lung cancer are mainly: persistent cough lasting for more than 2 weeks, blood in cough, breathlessness and chest pain. Many are incidentally detected during routine health checkups.
It is also noteworthy that women with lung cancer respond differently to treatments, being more responsive to chemotherapy and targeted therapy and they exhibit greater survival rates. Nonsmoking status predicts better survival as expected.

Abstinence from smoking, avoidance of other exposures like passive smoking, cooking gas etc.and being aware of its symptoms are important steps in prevention as well as early diagnosis of lung cancer in women. Most importantly awareness that a woman can suffer from lung cancer is the first step towards the reduction in incidence of the same.
